07/02/10- AUL 2A- Inter City Celtic 4 Killowen 1

A.U.L. 2A

Sunday 7th February 2010.

Inter City Celtic 4 Killowen 1

Killowen suffered their first league defeat since October following a 4-1 defeat away to Inter City Celtic on Sunday morning. Despite a promising first half display, Killowen faltered badly in the second period and were severely punished by the home side. Michael Moore, John Mc Donnell and Brian O’ Sullivan were restored to the starting line-up having missed the recent scoreless encounter with Coachford. Killowen settled well and almost took the lead after 16 minutes. A wayward clearance by the Inter City custodian was seized upon by Stephen Daly whose audacious long range effort drifted narrowly wide. However, it was the home side who took the lead after 19 minutes, Killowen failed to clear their lines inside the area and this allowed the opposing centre forward to lift a shot over the covering defenders and keeper. The advantage only lasted six minutes as Killowen levelled with a well taken goal, Eoin O’ Sullivan volleying in from 25 yards out after Declan O’ Briens corner was only partially cleared. Killowen’s front pairing combined a few minutes later, Brian O’ Sullivan’s pass released O’ Brien but he couldn’t get his shot on target. Inter City finished the half strongly as visiting ‘keeper Sheehan was called into action on a number of occasions. The woodwork saved Killowen after 42 minutes as a shot from distance cannoned off the crossbar. Inter continued to apply pressure and Patrick Bermingham was well positioned to head off the line just before the break.

The home side regained the lead ten minutes into the second half, Killowen were penalised for a handball infringement inside the area, a well taken spot kick gave Sheehan no chance in the Killowen goal. Despite the best efforts of Eoin O’ Sullivan and Stephen Daly in midfield, Killowen struggled to make inroads against a well organised home side. It was 3-1 on 70 minutes, a long range free kick struck the crossbar and following a goalmouth scramble the rebound was poked over the line from close range. Inter’s fourth and final goal arrived after 82 minutes, poor marking from a corner resulting in a free header from inside the six yard box. Killowen custodian Sheehan prevented a fifth goal on the stroke of full time as he got down bravely to foil an oncoming striker.

23/01/10 AUL 2A Killowen 0 Coachford (B) 0

Saturday 23rd January.

A.U.L. 2A

Killowen 0   Coachford (B) 0.

Stalemate at Killowen on Saturday afternoon as the home side and mid-Cork rivals, Coachford, played out a scoreless draw. The Killowen line up showed a number of changes from last weeks defeat to Richmond. Kevin Collins replaced Kieran Casey at left back, Mark Cremin, Michael Moore and Brian O’ Sullivan were unavailable and were replaced by Eoin O’ Sullivan, Paul Lynch and Shane O’ Leary. O’ Sullivan was involved early on as his pass sent Patrick Bermingham clear on goal but his shot just skimmed the far post with barely a minute played. Coachford showed their attacking prowess in the 10th minute, from a Coachford corner on the right Billy Sheehan was forced in to a double save and required Owen Braun’s assistance to complete the clearance. Eoin Scannell combined well with Braun on the right wing after 20 minutes, with Braun’s cross requiring a vital interception by the visitors ‘keeper as Declan O’ Brien and Bermingham were unmarked in the six yard box. Skipper O’ Brien turned provider two minutes later as his cross found the head of Shane O’ Leary who couldn’t direct his header goalwards. Coachford should have made the most of a stray clearance by the home side after 26 minutes but failed to hit the target from a good position. Another Coachford corner led to a free header going over the bar after 28 minutes as the visitors began to establish a foothold in the game. Killowen left back, Kevin Collins, ventured forward to test the Coachford ‘keeper with a low drive after O’ Leary had set him up with a clever pass. The home side had the ball in the net six minutes before the break, but the referee correctly disallowed O’ Brien’s strike for an offside infringement.

Paul Lynch created an early second half opportunity for Bermingham whose goalbound header was tipped over. The resulting corner was cleared allowing Coachford to break at pace against a shorthanded defence, home ‘keeper Sheehan was left exposed but the Coachford striker dragged his shot wide. It was a let off for Killowen as it was the most clear cut opportunity either side had created over the 90 minutes. Bermingham and Lynch combined again after 51 minutes but the Coachford ‘keeper was equal to Lynch’s headed effort. Chances were few and far between in the closing quarter, O’ Brien nearly capitalised on a handling error from the visitors ‘keeper after 61 minutes, but he shot over from a tight angle. Both sides traded free kicks in the closing minutes, but defences held firm to ensure a scoreless encounter.
