Killowen 0 Coachford (B) 0.
Stalemate at Killowen on Saturday afternoon as the home side and mid-Cork rivals, Coachford, played out a scoreless draw. The Killowen line up showed a number of changes from last weeks defeat to Richmond. Kevin Collins replaced Kieran Casey at left back, Mark Cremin, Michael Moore and Brian O’ Sullivan were unavailable and were replaced by Eoin O’ Sullivan, Paul Lynch and Shane O’ Leary. O’ Sullivan was involved early on as his pass sent Patrick Bermingham clear on goal but his shot just skimmed the far post with barely a minute played. Coachford showed their attacking prowess in the 10th minute, from a Coachford corner on the right Billy Sheehan was forced in to a double save and required Owen Braun’s assistance to complete the clearance. Eoin Scannell combined well with Braun on the right wing after 20 minutes, with Braun’s cross requiring a vital interception by the visitors ‘keeper as Declan O’ Brien and Bermingham were unmarked in the six yard box. Skipper O’ Brien turned provider two minutes later as his cross found the head of Shane O’ Leary who couldn’t direct his header goalwards. Coachford should have made the most of a stray clearance by the home side after 26 minutes but failed to hit the target from a good position. Another Coachford corner led to a free header going over the bar after 28 minutes as the visitors began to establish a foothold in the game. Killowen left back, Kevin Collins, ventured forward to test the Coachford ‘keeper with a low drive after O’ Leary had set him up with a clever pass. The home side had the ball in the net six minutes before the break, but the referee correctly disallowed O’ Brien’s strike for an offside infringement.
Paul Lynch created an early second half opportunity for Bermingham whose goalbound header was tipped over. The resulting corner was cleared allowing Coachford to break at pace against a shorthanded defence, home ‘keeper Sheehan was left exposed but the Coachford striker dragged his shot wide. It was a let off for Killowen as it was the most clear cut opportunity either side had created over the 90 minutes. Bermingham and Lynch combined again after 51 minutes but the Coachford ‘keeper was equal to Lynch’s headed effort. Chances were few and far between in the closing quarter, O’ Brien nearly capitalised on a handling error from the visitors ‘keeper after 61 minutes, but he shot over from a tight angle. Both sides traded free kicks in the closing minutes, but defences held firm to ensure a scoreless encounter.
