26/04/09.  A.U.L. 2A.

Waterloo 1.     Killowen 4.

An improved second half display enabled Killowen to take maximum points following Sundays A.U.L. 2 A. clash in Grenagh. Killowen manager, Declan Cassidy, made one change to the Killowen line-up with Dave Lynch replacing David Mc Carthy in the centre of defence. A sluggish opening period from the visitors was punished by an early goal in the 7th minute. Waterloo took full advantage of a stray pass in midfield to create a scoring opportunity inside the area which was duly despatched past Brian Kane in the Killowen goal. The home side’s dominance continued and the advantage should have been doubled in the 17th minute as Eoin O’ Sullivan prevented a certain goal with a well timed tackle inside the area. Waterloo wasted an even better opportunity minutes later when their striker broke through on goal only to shoot straight at ‘keeper Kane. That miss proved costly as Killowen equalised on the half hour mark, Declan O’ Donoghue accepting a pass in midfield before unleashing a powerful drive past the Waterloo custodian for his eight goal of the season. The home side were now on the defensive for the remainder of the opening half as Patrick Bermingham and Brian O’ Sullivan saw goal bound efforts turned away by the previously under worked ‘keeper.

Killowen resumed the second half in dominant fashion with top scorer Declan O’ Brien flashing a free kick wide after 52 minutes. Midfielder Patrick Bermingham went closer minutes later as his long range free struck the crossbar. A long punt from defence almost opened up the Waterloo defence after 55 minutes but Brian O’ Sullivan failed to divert the ball on target. However, Killowen’s second goal arrived a minute later, Eoin O’ Sullivan’s raking pass freed O’ Brien on the wing, he cut inside his marker before finishing clinically into the far corner. The contest was far from over and this was evident after 60 minutes as Waterloo once again failed to score with only the ‘keeper to beat. Killowen required a third goal to make the game safe and it duly arrived after 65 minutes, Patrick Bermingham notching his seventh goal of the season with a powerfully struck free kick from 25 yards out. Killowen were comfortable now and should have added a fourth after 76 minutes but the usually reliable O’ Brien blazed over from a good position. Waterloo had one final opportunity from a free kick in a favourable position but a poorly struck shot failed to trouble Kane. Killowen’s fourth goal came in the 86th minute, substitute David Mc Carthy scoring with a well placed shot from inside the area and giving him the distinction of scoring Killowen’s first and final goals of this seasons league campaign. Indeed, Mc Carthy could have netted a second for himself in the dying minutes only to shoot wide after good build up play from Denis O’ Regan. A good end to a season that promised so much for Killowen, who unfortunately miss out on promotion by the narrowest of margins.

19/04/09.  A.U.L. 2A

Killowen 1.       Waterloo 0.

An opportunistic first half strike from Killowen striker, Brian O’ Sullivan, decided this Mid-Cork derby at Killowen on Sunday morning. The home sides line up showed two changes from last weeks victory in Millstreet, Eoin O’ Sullivan and David Mc Carthy replacing Owen Braun and Dave Lynch who were both unavailable. Killowen set the tone from the first whistle as midfielder Denis O’ Regan tested the Waterloo ‘keeper with a stinging shot in the 7th minute. Centre back Eoin O’ Sullivan found ventured forward in the 14th minute but his shot found the side netting. Patrick Bermingham was next to try his luck as his dangerous free kick was blocked by the overworked Waterloo defence. Killowen ‘keeper Brian Kane was hardly troubled in the opening stages and his lone contribution was a long punt to put Brian O’ Sullivan in the clear in after 17 minutes, however, the Waterloo defence recovered to make a timely block inside the area. Waterloo did manage to create an opening in the 20th minute but unfortunately shot over from a good position. This was followed later by a well delivered free kick into the Killowen area but the resulting header drifted harmlessly wide. Killowen’s domination resumed for the remainder of the half, Declan O’ Brien volleyed over after 24 minutes and a surging run by the same player was ended by the combined efforts of the visitors defence. The O’ Sullivan brothers were again to the fore as Brian saw his effort blocked inside the area after 26 minutes and elder brother, Eoin, going close with a header minutes later. However, the pressure finally paid off in the 37th minute, Paul Lynch’s shot deflected into the path of Brian O’ Sullivan who calmly finished with a low drive past the ‘keeper. It was no more than Killowen deserved for an emphatic first half display.

Killowen were grateful for O’ Sullivan’s first half strike as it was Waterloo who asked all the questions in the second period. The home side had an early scare as Waterloo had genuine penalty claims rejected by the referee after 47 minutes. The visitors put that disappointment aside and proceeded to put Killowen under severe pressure for the remainder of the game. Killowen struggled to gain possession as it was Waterloo who created most of the opportunities but all their good work was undone by a combination of wayward finishing and the excellence of Killowen’s back four. The previously under worked Brian Kane was not found wanting either and he denied Waterloo with a pair of fine saves in the 66th and 80th minute. A rare attack by Killowen ended with Bermingham failing to get a touch to Declan O’ Donoghue’s inviting cross after 67 minutes. Waterloo continued to press for an equaliser but finally ran out of ideas as Killowen substitute Greg Creedon almost made it 2-0 in the dying minutes but his audacious lob from distance went narrowly over the crossbar.

11/04/09.  A.U.L. 2A.

Millstreet Celtic 1.     Killowen 4.

A four goal blast from Killowen ended Millstreet Celtic’s title aspirations following an entertaining A.U.L. 2A clash at the Millstreet venue on Saturday. An assured defensive performance combined with some clinical finishing contributed to Killowen’s victory. Killowen showed a number of changes to the starting line up, Kevin Collins resumed at left back and the versatile Dave Lynch also returned forming an impressive partnership with Owen Braun in the centre of defence. Killowen’s attacking prowess was evident in the opening minutes as Braun and Patrick Bermingham worked a clever routine from a corner kick that caused panic in the home defence. This was followed by Denis O’Regan’s incisive run and shot that drifted just wide of the upright. Nine minutes had elapsed before Millstreet’s first attack, a dangerous cross from the right was headed behind by Paul Lynch at the expense of a corner. The resulting flag kick forced Brian Kane to deflect a goal bound header over the bar. Kane was now the busier of the two ‘keepers and was well positioned to smother a powerful drive after 16 minutes. At the other end, Declan O’ Brien was narrowly off target with a free kick from distance before Kane again denied Millstreet with a timely block after 21 minutes. Millstreet kept pressing and visitors full back Eoin Scannell was well positioned to take a header off the line from another attack. However Killowen absorbed the pressure and struck for the opening goal after 25 minutes. Brian O’ Sullivan’s pass released Bermingham on the left wing and his cross was tapped in by the inrushing Declan O’Brien. Millstreet refused to yield and tested Kane on a number of occasions before exploiting a Killowen error to equalise on the stroke of half time.

The game turned in Killowen’s favour early in the second half. The lead was regained with less than a minute played, Paul Lynch netting from close range after Bermingham’s clever flick had created the opportunity. Millstreet were then thrown a lifeline in the 52nd minute as the referee awarded a penalty following an infringement in the area. A powerfully struck kick was brilliantly tipped over by Kane as the momentum swung towards the visitors. Another Killowen attack saw O’ Brien turn provider as his diagonal pass was headed narrowly over by Bermingham. The home side fought valiantly and looked dangerous in attack as Scannell was again on hand to take a goal bound effort off the line after 62 minutes. Killowen had a two goal cushion four minutes later as O’ Brien converted from the spot following a foul on Braun in the area. The visitors refused to sit on their lead as the hardworking Brian O’ Sullivan worked a neat one-two with O’Regan before firing a shot across the face of goal after 76 minutes. Killowen’s fourth arrived with nine minutes left, impressive midfielder Declan O’ Donoghue notching his seventh goal of the campaign with a neat turn and finish inside the area.

04/04/09. A.U.L. 2A.

Inter City Celtic  4.        Killowen  3.

Killowen slumped to their seventh league defeat of the season following Saturdays encounter with Inter City Celtic. Despite being two goals in arrears early in the second half, Killowen regained parity by the 70th minute only to concede what proved to be the winning goal a minute later. Manager Declan Cassidy made several alterations to the starting line up as midfielders Patrick Bermingham, Robert White and Denis O’ Regan were handed starting roles. It was White who had the first chance of the game in the opening minute when he broke clear from the home defence only to shoot straight at the ‘keeper. It was a costly miss as Inter City scored with their first attack four minutes later, slack marking in the Killowen defence allowing the home side to score from close range. It should have been 2-0 after 20 minutes as an Inter player fired over the bar when well positioned inside the area. Killowen weathered the storm and were back on level terms in the 28th minute. Denis O’ Regan’s perfectly timed pass released Declan O’ Brien who calmly placed his shot past the advancing ‘keeper. It proved to be Killowen’s best spell of the opening half with Patrick Bermingham and O’ Brien testing the Inter rearguard on numerous occasions. This period of dominance was not reflected on the scoreboard and it was Inter who almost added to the scoring as a snapshot struck Brian Kane’s upright just before the interval.

A disastrous four minute spell at the beginning of the second half contributed to Killowen’s downfall. With barely a minute played a harmless free kick from distance somehow ended up in the Killowen net. Killowen were further in arrears by the 50th minute as the home side made the most of a breakaway attack to make it 3-1. Inter should have made it 4-1 a minute later but the upright saved Killowen on this occasion. Despite their defensive frailties, Killowen still looked dangerous going forward and were rewarded with a second goal on the hour as Owen Braun was perfectly positioned to score from Patrick Bermingham’s flick on. Killowen pushed for an equaliser with O’ Brien clear on goal after 65 minutes but was foiled by the combined efforts of ‘keeper and defenders. However he was not to be denied in the 70th minute, Paul Lynch was fouled just outside the area and O’Brien notched his 16th goal of the season with a perfectly placed free kick to bring the sides level. But all that good work was undone a minute later as Killowen failed to clear their lines from a corner kick and Inter took full advantage with another tap in goal. Killowen were then reduced to 10 men for the remaining quarter of an hour and despite this handicap they still managed to create opportunities. Leading scorer O’ Brien was again the instigator as he found space on the left side of the area but his shot failed to trouble the ‘keeper. The same player then sent over a teasing cross that required a vital interception by the home defence to prevent a goal. Inter still looked dangerous on the break and were denied by Brian Kane’s timely block in the 80th minute. Killowen threw everything into attack for the closing minutes but their misfortune was summed up in the 90th minute with an inexcusable miss from in front of goal.

22/03/09. A.U.L. 2A.

Killowen  0.      Strand Utd  3.

The A.U.L. match of the week featured local rivals Killowen and Strand Utd in an A.U.L. 2A clash at Killowen on Sunday morning. It resulted in a well deserved 3-0 victory to Strand who are enduring a lean time at the wrong end of the table. Killowen are in the hunt for promotion but manager Declan Cassidy was forced to name an unfamiliar looking side for this encounter as seven players were unavailable for selection. Despite a promising start that saw Paul Lynch narrowly off target with a near post header in the 4th minute, Killowen were on the back foot for long periods as Strand dominated the opening half. A Strand snapshot from inside the area flashed narrowly over Brian Kane’s crossbar in the 10th minute and this was followed moments later by strong penalty claims following a clash in the area. The competitive nature of this contest resulted in countless free kicks which disrupted the flow of the game and as a result both sides struggled to settle into a rhythm. Strand enjoyed the greater possession but were limited to long range efforts for the remainder of the half. Killowen’s only shot of note came five minutes before the break, Declan O’ Brien’s free kick had the Strand ‘keeper at full stretch as he dived low to his right to divert the ball away from danger.

The home side went close to opening the scoring in the 50th minute, O’ Brien’s free kick from the left touchline deceived the visitors ‘keeper but unfortunately the ball struck the crossbar before rebounding to safety. Strand also looked dangerous from set pieces and a well struck free kick flew across the area in the 55th minute requiring a block from a home defender to prevent a goal. The action swung to the other end with Killowen’s Michael Kelleher going close in the 60th minute as his hooked shot beat the ‘keeper but rolled just outside the upright. Strand survived that let-off and proceed to take the lead nine minutes later. A crossfield pass from the right wing split the Killowen defence allowing the Strand left winger time and space to slide the ball past the exposed Kane. That lead was doubled with a quarter of an hour remaining, Strand worked the ball up the left and the resulting cross to the far post was met with a well placed header. Killowen committed extra players forward in an effort to salvage the game, player/manager Declan Cassidy went close after 78 minutes with a measured lob that caused an anxious moment for the Strand custodian. However Strand saved the best till last with a superbly taken third goal nine minutes from time to secure the points and help ease their relegation worries.

14/03/09. A.O.H. Cup 4th round.

Glenthorn Celtic (A) 3. Killowen 2.

No shame in defeat for A.U.L. 2A side Killowen as higher ranked Glenthorn Celtic advance in the A.O.H. cup following a 3-2 victory in this 4th round tie played on Saturday. The city based side started brightly and forced visiting ‘keeper Brian Kane into action after 5 minutes as he reacted superbly to block a close range effort. The premier division side scored in their next attack after 8 minutes, a swift exchange of passes in midfield created the shooting opportunity which was duly despatched into the bottom corner. Killowen put a nervous start behind them and proceeded to create a couple of early chances with Declan O’ Brien shooting over from a good position after 10 minutes. Top scorer O’ Brien then tested the home ‘keeper with a well struck free kick as Killowen grew in confidence. The visitors early efforts were rewarded with an equalising goal after 15 minutes, Dave Lynch’s shot was handled in the area and O’ Brien stepped up to convert the resulting penalty. However Glenthorn regained the lead after 25 minutes as a move instigated from defence was finished with another powerful drive hitting the target. The home side applied maximum pressure but were finding it hard to break down a determined Killowen side for whom Eoin O’ Sullivan and Kieran Casey were rock solid in defence. Glenthorn had a let off after half an hour as Owen Braun’s cushioned header landed invitingly in front of goal but there was no Killowen player in position to take advantage. Glenthorn were not as wasteful and their third goal arrived 2 minutes later. Killowen failed to close down in midfield allowing Glenthorn to work the ball to the edge of the area resulting in another stunning strike past Kane in the visitors goal. It was Kane’s heroics in the 40th minute that prevented a fourth goal as he got down smartly to block a close range shot.

Despite the deficit Killowen continued to create opportunities, Owen Braun saw his powerful header tipped over the bar after 62 minutes following Patrick Bermingham’s excellent delivery. The margin was reduced in the 65th minute as Killowen were awarded a second penalty following a foul on Antoine Guy. Once again Declan O’ Brien was entrusted with the responsibility and he made no mistake from 12 yards. Glenthorn continued in their efforts to make the game safe and despite going close from a succession of corners they failed to add to their tally. O’ Brien was seeking a hat-trick as he combined with impressive midfielder Declan O’ Donoghue after 76 minutes but the Glenthorn custodian was equal to his effort. Both sides kept pushing forward right to the end with Kane again showing his class with a reflex save after 80 minutes and substitute Brian O’ Sullivan going close at the other end as Killowen battled desperately for an equaliser. However it was not to be for a gallant Killowen side who can now concentrate on the title race in A.U.L. league 2A.

Killowen 2.       Fairview 0.

Goals from Paul Lynch and Declan O’ Brien condemned Fairview to only their second league defeat of the season following this top of the table clash at Killowen. The home side showed three changes from last weeks defeat in Carrigtwohill. Team captain Eoin O’ Sullivan and Eoin Scannell resumed at centre half and right back respectively with Paul Lynch starting in attack. Killowen started brightly as Declan O’ Brien and Paul Lynch saw their efforts go narrowly wide in the opening minutes. With right back Scannell and Dave Lynch combining well it was a dominant opening period from Killowen. The home side attacked at will with impressive striker O’ Brien forcing a great save from the Fairview ‘keeper after 15 minutes. Killowen’s hard work finally paid off after 17 minutes, Patrick Bermingham’s well delivered corner kick was headed powerfully to the net by Paul Lynch. The advantage was nearly doubled a minute later , the visitors ‘keeper failed to hold an O’ Brien free kick with Bermingham’s follow up shot blocked in the resulting goalmouth scramble. Midfielder Declan O’ Donoghue was next to try his luck after 30 minutes but he volleyed over from outside the area. Fairview’s only serious attack of the half almost yielded an equaliser after 36 minutes. A close range header from a corner struck the crossbar and the rebound was cleared off the line as Killowen entered the interval with their slender advantage still intact.

The competitive nature of this game was clearly evident in the opening stages of the second half as both sides gave their all. The turning point in this contest came just after the hour mark. Fairview shot wide from a good position and in Killowen’s next attack Declan O’ Donoghue was fouled 25 yards from the Fairview goal. Once again Declan O’ Brien showed his expertise from the dead ball as his powerful free kick flew into the top corner to give Killowen a two goal cushion. It was to be O’ Brien’s final act as an ankle injury saw him replaced by Brian O’ Sullivan. Fairview refused to lie down with Brian Kane called into action in the 63rd minute tipping a long range drive over the bar. The visitors committed extra players into attack but it mattered little as Eoin O’ Sullivan and David Mc Carthy defended heroically in the centre of defence. A succession of Fairview corners late in the game failed to yield a goal as Killowen held firm to record a valuable win.

Carrigtwohill Utd 4.      Killowen 0.

Killowen returned to competitive action following a five week break with a trip to East Cork to face 1st Division outfit Carrigtwohill Utd in the 2nd round of the County Cup. The fixture finally got the go ahead after two previous postponements and Killowen’s lack of match practice was clearly evident as they slumped to defeat against a well drilled Carrigtwohill side. Killowen started brightly with Declan O’ Brien almost opening the scoring in the first minute. That was the only highlight for Killowen in the opening period as the home side opened the scoring midway through the half. Slack marking from a corner kick was punished by Carrigtwohill who were full value for their interval lead. The advantage was doubled early in the second half as Killowen needlessly gave the ball away in midfield, having secured possession the home side availed of another Killowen error to clinically finish past the stranded Brian Kane. It just wasn’t Killowen’s afternoon as Patrick Bermingham was clearly impeded in the area but the Referee ignored the penalty appeals. A further brace of goals late in the half ended Killowen’s interest in this competition.

Killowen 3.       Donoughmore Ath 1.

Killowen made a winning return to league action with a 3-1 victory over Donoughmore on Saturday. Manager Declan Cassidy made two changes to the side that tasted victory in the County Cup last week. Eamonn Murphy deputised in goal for Brian Kane and Declan O’ Donoghue replaced Owen Braun in midfield. The home side had an ideal start with a goal after 3 minutes, Denis O’ Regan and Patrick Bermingham combined to set up Declan O’ Brien who netted from close range. Killowen benefited from the strong wind in the 1st half and as a result enjoyed plenty possession. Despite this dominance, Killowen failed to add to their tally in the opening period and it was the visitors who went close on a number of occasions only to be denied by home ‘keeper Murphy.

Donoughmore found themselves two goals in arrears early in the second half as a move instigated by Robert White and Brian O’ Sullivan ended with Declan O’ Donoughue’s powerful drive from the edge of the area hitting the target. Despite this setback the visitors showed signs of improvement as the game progressed. Having struck the bar in the 65th minute they finally got off the mark in the 68th minute with a neat finish from inside the area. Killowen ‘keeper Murphy then produced a pair of superb saves to protect their slender advantage as Donoughmore fought valiantly for an equaliser. However a third goal in the 80th minute finally secured victory for Killowen. Skipper Eoin O’ Sullivan broke up a Donoughmore attack and powered forward from defence before releasing O’ Brien whose cross was converted by the inrushing Bermingham. Killowen finished strongly and White almost made it four but saw his well struck free kick saved by the visitors ’keeper.

03/01/09. County Cup 1st Round.

Killowen 1.     Hibernians (A) 1. (After extra time, Killowen won 6-5 on penalties)

Killowen and visitors Hibernians played out an entertaining County Cup tie at the Killowen venue on Saturday afternoon. As the game ended 1-1 after regulation and extra time, it required the dreaded penalty shoot-out to settle the contest. Both sides matched each other in the shoot-out until David Mc Carthy’s well converted spot kick was followed by an excellent save from Brian Kane to ensure Killowen’s progress to the next round. It was fitting that Kane should have the final act in this tie, he was involved in the opening incident of the contest after 3 minutes, producing a fine block to deny Hibernians a clear chance on goal. That was the visitor’s only chance of note in the opening half hour as Killowen took control of the game. Right back Dave Lynch was at the heart of some of Killowen’s best moves of the opening half. His pass in the 5th minute set Patrick Bermingham clear on goal but his effort was blocked at the expense of a corner. Lynch was involved again minutes later as he combined with Robert White to set up Brian O’ Sullivan whose cross yielded yet another corner for Killowen. A long ball from defence put O’ Sullivan in the clear after 12 minutes but he shot over the bar from a favourable position. The home side were now well on top especially in midfield where Denis O’ Regan tested the visitors ‘keeper with a low drive and fellow midfielder White trying his luck from distance on a number of occasions. The overworked visitors defence were glad to see Declan O’ Brien shoot over the bar in the 40th minute as he picked up a stray clearance on the edge of the area. A rare foray into the Killowen half saw Hibernians shoot wide from a good position after 42 minutes but their next attack was to prove fruitful. With half time approaching a sequence of passes opened up the Killowen defence and a mistimed tackle left the Referee with no option but to point to the spot. A well struck penalty gave the visitors an unlikely lead at the break.

Despite being in arrears, Killowen began the second period in the same fashion as the opening 45 minutes. With barely a minute played O’ Brien’s cross found Brian O’ Sullivan at the near post but he shot wide under pressure from the Hibernians defence. The visitors were playing with renewed confidence and were intent on adding to their tally but a couple of smart saves by home ‘keeper Kane kept them at bay. Parity was restored in the 55th minute, Hibernians conceded a free at the edge of their own area and could only watch as Declan O’ Brien notched his tenth goal of the season with a sublime free kick. It was game on again as Killowen went close minutes later through Brian O’ Sullivan whose effort was blocked by the hard working visitors defence. Eoin O’ Sullivan’s free kick deep into the opposing penalty area almost provided an opening for Killowen but it was the visitors who had the best chance to snatch victory in the dying minutes of normal time. A quick break from defence resulted in a powerful drive striking the Killowen crossbar before the ball was cleared to safety. With both sides having given their all in normal time it was little surprise that extra time wasn’t as frantic. Denis O’ Regan and Patrick Bermingham did provide openings for the home side who had to withstand a period of late pressure from the visitors in the second period of extra time. So it was on to penalties, O’ Brien, Braun, Kane, Dave Lynch and O Regan were all successful from the spot for Killowen with Hibernians also matching that total. David Mc Carthy kept his nerve to convert Killowen’s sixth penalty and Kane proved to be the hero for the home side as he got down well to parry the final Hibernians penalty.

20/12/08. Saxone Cup 2nd round.

Killowen 3        Knockraha 4. (After extra time)

Killowen’s quest for Saxone Cup honours came to an end on Saturday last following an extra time defeat at the hands of Knockraha. It looked good for Killowen who were 3-2 ahead with less than two minutes remaining in normal time but a controversial equaliser for Knockraha led to extra time and eventual defeat for the home side. Knockraha were in the ascendancy during the opening stages, home ‘keeper Brian Kane did well to block a close range shot in the 5th minute as the visitors put the Killowen defence under pressure from set pieces. The East Cork based side looked dangerous from open play also, this was evident on the quarter hour mark as a combination of passes in midfield created an opening for the Knockraha striker but fortunately for Killowen he dragged his shot wide. The home side were slow to settle although Dave Lynch found the back of the net with a close range header after 20 minutes but he was deemed offside by the referee. However Killowen had a valid goal minutes later, Patrick Bermingham battled hard to win possession in midfield and his pass found Robert White whose drive from the edge of the area flew into the top corner. The lead was short-lived as Knockraha struck twice in the space of two minutes to turn this game on its head. A swift counterattack in the 30th minute ended with a simple tap in, the second came courtesy of some loose marking by the home side allowing a free header from another corner kick. Killowen were living dangerously as Kane and Owen Braun combined to prevent a third goal for Knockraha just before the interval.

Knockraha were first to threaten in the second period, a well timed tackle from Killowen captain Eoin O’ Sullivan prevented a genuine goal scoring opportunity in the opening minutes. Having survived that early scare, Killowen drew level after 58 minutes. The ball was worked forward to Bermingham, his shot from inside the area didn’t seem to have the required power but somehow the ball squeezed under the ‘keepers body and trickled over the line. That was the tonic Killowen badly needed as the team now began to play with a bit more assurance. Substitute Denis O’ Regan entered the fray and made an instant impression. He combined well with Declan O’ Brien after 60 minutes only to see O’ Brien’s goal bound shot blocked. A goalmouth scramble presented opportunities for O’ Regan and White in the 70th minute, however both players were off target from favourable positions inside the area. But Killowen’s patience was rewarded with a lead goal in the 75th minute. Patrick Bermingham’s shot was spilled by the ‘keeper and Robert White reacted quickest to tap in from close range. Declan O’ Brien should have wrapped up the game for the home side in the 80th minute but he shot over the bar with only the ’keeper to beat. Knockraha fought valiantly for an equaliser but were finding it hard to penetrate the Killowen rearguard until a questionable refereeing decision lead to an equalising goal in the dying moments.

It was heartbreak for Killowen and relief for Knockraha as both sides faced into extra time with a place in the quarter finals at stake. Brian Kane was the busier of the ‘keepers in the first period. He got down well to block a goal bound effort in the 7th minute and thwarted Knockraha again moments later by saving a powerful shot from distance. His resulting clearance put Declan O’ Donoghue clear on goal but his effort was deflected behind for a corner. The deciding goal arrived midway through the second period. Killowen only partially cleared a Knockraha attack and as the ball bobbled around the edge of the area the Knockraha midfielder showed great composure to place his shot beyond the despairing dive of Kane. Despite this setback, Killowen made one last push for an equaliser. Centre back David Mc Carthy joined the attack and had the ball in the net only to be called back for offside. The home side made one final attack down the right wing as Denis O’ Regan forced a corner but Knockraha cleared the danger and progress to the quarter finals.

Donoughmore Athletic 1         Killowen 1

Stalemate at Donoughmore on Saturday as the home side played out a 1-1 draw with near neighbours Killowen. The Killowen side showed one change from last weeks encounter with Inter City Celtic as Kevin Collins returned to the side in place of Stephen Daly. The starting team also showed a number of positional changes, Collins slotted in at left back with Robert White reverting to right back in place of Dave Lynch who occupied the right side of midfield. Owen Braun now partnered Declan O’ Donoghue in the centre of midfield as Patrick Bermingham joined Declan O’ Brien up front. Skipper Eoin O’ Sullivan should have opened the scoring for Killowen in the 5th minute but he miskicked in front of goal after Kieran Casey had created the opening. However the visitors were in front 5 minutes later courtesy of regular marksman Declan O’ Brien. Midfielder Declan O’ Donoghue was fouled at the edge of the Donoughmore area, up stepped O’ Brien and he curled the resulting free kick around the wall into the bottom corner. O’ Brien should have added to his tally minutes later but he shot wide from a favourable position following good work by Patrick Bermingham. Owen Braun tried his luck with a volley in the 15th minute but he failed to trouble the ‘keeper. It was all Killowen now and they should have extended their lead after 20 minutes. Brian Kane’s long clearance released Bermingham on the left wing but he failed to find O’ Brien who was unmarked in the area. Killowen’s early dominance could be best summed up by Donoughmore’s first effort on goal not arriving until the 25th minute. But despite being in the ascendancy, Killowen allowed Donoughmore in for an equaliser after half an hour. A free kick from the right wing reached an unmarked Donoughmore player whose looping header beat Kane in the Killowen goal. Back came the visitors and Declan O’ Brien showed his expertise in dead ball situations again after 35 minutes. His well delivered corner kick caused panic in the home defence leading to a goal line clearance and a follow up shot from Braun just clearing the bar. Donoughmore were also proficient from set pieces, a free kick hoisted into the Killowen area broke kindly for their midfielder who was denied by Kane’s sharp reflexes. Killowen regrouped and a swift break from defence ended with Declan O’ Donoghue’s mazy run inside the Donoughmore penalty box but he shot over from a good position. Brian Kane was called into action again just before the interval as he got down well to save a close range Donoughmore effort.

Killowen’s Dave Lynch had an eventful few minutes at the start of the second half. He headed narrowly wide from an O’ Brien corner in the 50th minute and was then central to an unsuccessful penalty appeal 5 minutes later. As he chased a loose ball in the area the Donoughmore ‘keeper appeared to trip him but the referee rejected the Killowen player’s appeals. He sustained an ankle injury as a result of this incident and was replaced by Paul Lynch. Killowen’s injury woes continued as Kevin Collins was forced to leave the action minutes later and the enforced changes had an unsettling effect on the team. Donoughmore enjoyed their best spell of the contest and should have scored in the 60th minute following a quick break from midfield but David Mc Carthy and O’ Sullivan combined to avert the danger. Killowen were not as dominant and were limited to a long range effort from O’ Donoghue after 75 minutes. Despite the home sides dominance they didn’t trouble Kane and it was Killowen who almost snatched maximum points near the end. With less than 2 minutes of normal time left Owen Braun used all his trickery to make space for himself in the area, his shot beat the ‘keeper but unfortunately the ball shaved the upright to drift harmlessly wide. However Killowen kept pressing and had two further chances in added time. The impressive O’ Brien shooting wide from the edge of the area and substitute Brian O’ Sullivan combining with O’ Donoghue only to see another chance go narrowly wide.

Killowen 2.       Inter City Celtic 3.

Killowen’s promotion prospects suffered a setback following Saturdays defeat at the hands of Inter City Celtic. On what was a bitterly cold day, both sides contributed to an entertaining contest and goalmouth incidents were plentiful. Killowen entered the game in a confident mood following last weeks win at higher ranked Hibernians in the A.O.H. cup. However the visitors looked lively from the kick-off and proceeded to strike the crossbar following their first attack after 4 minutes. Owen Braun had Killowen’s first chance of note in the 9th minute but the Inter City custodian got down well to push the ball away for a corner. His strike partner, Declan O’ Brien, tested the keeper 5 minutes later as Killowen began to dominate proceedings in the middle third of the pitch. But somewhat against the run of play the visitors took the lead in the 20th minute. A free kick from just inside the halfway line caused confusion in the Killowen ranks, an unmarked Inter City player took advantage by looping a header over the stranded Brian Kane. It was rough justice on Killowen but they responded positively by continuing to stretch the visitors defence. In the 25th minute, Dave Lynch’s excellent cross was met by the inrushing Patrick Bermingham but his finish lacked the required accuracy. A minute later Stephen Daly was the provider as his cross was met by Braun who directed a header over the ’keeper but unfortunately over the bar. These misses proved costly as Inter City struck for their second goal after half an hour. Killowen needlessly lost possession in midfield, a neat back-heel put an Inter City player in the clear and he made no mistake from inside the area. Despite being in arrears Killowen were still creating chances, Braun shot narrowly wide from close range in the 32nd minute and this was followed by an O’ Brien effort that just cleared the crossbar. But the home side found themselves three goals down by the break as a harmless looking cross was inadvertently dropped over the line by Kane in the 35th minute.

Manager Declan Cassidy rung the changes early in the 2nd half with Brian O’ Sullivan and Antoine Guy entering the fray. O’ Sullivan joined Braun and O’ Brien in the forward line as Killowen went for broke. Braun struck the crossbar with a close range header and he was at the end of a Bermingham cross minutes later but failed to trouble the ‘keeper. As Killowen were committed to attack, gaps appeared in defence and Kane redeemed himself with a pair of smart saves in the 60th and 62nd minute. Kane foiled Inter City again in the 78th minute before Declan O’ Brien pulled a goal back two minutes later with a perfectly executed free kick from 25 yards. It was 3-2 in the 87th minute, skipper Eoin O’ Sullivan notching his first goal of the season with a powerful drive to set up an exciting finish. However the visitors remained solid in defence and repelled a late Killowen rally to clinch victory.

15/11/08. Saxone Cup 1st Round.

 Killowen 7.      Knocknaheeney Celtic 2.

Killowen advance to the 2nd round of the Saxone Cup following a comprehensive victory over visitors Knocknaheeney Celtic on Saturday afternoon. The home side set the tone from the first whistle and were ahead within 6 minutes, an attack up the right wing instigated by Kieran Casey ended with Declan O’ Brien’s strike from inside the area finding the corner of the net. The visitors defence were overworked as O’ Brien and Owen Braun were proving a handful, the pair combined well after 13 minutes when O’ Brien broke free from his markers but his strike didn’t trouble the opposing ‘keeper. Killowen’s next attack yielded a second goal, Casey was again the provider as his cross wasn’t cleared by the Knocknaheeney defence and this allowed Declan O’ Donoghue time and space to stroke the ball past the ‘keeper. Killowen were reduced to 10 men in the 25th minute but it mattered little as O’ Brien made it 3-0 in the 27th minute when he outpaced the defence to score with a low drive for his second goal of the afternoon. Knocknaheeney showed signs of a recovery as scoring chances were spurned in the 32nd and 36th minute before finally getting off the mark in the 40th minute when a speculative cross deceived home ‘keeper Brian Kane. However any notions of a comeback were ended a minute before the break as O’ Brien completed his hat-trick following another assist from Casey.

Knocknaheeney started the second half brightly and took advantage of some slack defending by Killowen to reduce the margin back to two after 50 minutes. That was as good as it got for the city side as Patrick Bermingham made his mark on this contest, his well taken goal in the 52nd minute was followed 8 minutes later by a powerful drive from an acute angle that effectively ended this game as a contest. Knocknaheeney’s day was summed up in the 68th minute when a goal bound shot was touched on to the post by Kane and cleared from danger. Killowen’s seventh arrived in the 85th minute, Brian O’ Sullivan’s shot was spilled by the keeper into the path of Kieran Casey who drove the ball into the roof of the net to cap a memorable day for Killowen.

Fairview 2.       Killowen 0.

Leaders Fairview continue at the summit of A.U.L. 2A following a 2-0 victory over Killowen in this top of the table clash at Hillington Park on Sunday morning. Second place Killowen were without several regulars and as both recognised goalkeepers were unavailable it required defender Dave Lynch to deputise between the posts. The stand in ‘keeper was busy early on as Fairview attacked from the first whistle. This period of dominance was rewarded with a goal in the 9th minute, a cross from the right eluded the Killowen defence and found it’s way to Fairview’s left winger who calmly placed the ball past the despairing dive of Lynch. The city side were well on top and proceeded to strike the upright from close range after 11 minutes and followed that up with a brace of shots from distance that failed to trouble Lynch. Killowen were living dangerously and saw another Fairview attempt hit the woodwork after 25 minutes before Declan O’ Brien tested the Fairview ‘keeper from a direct free kick after 32 minutes. The same player almost got through on goal 2 minutes later when he raced on to pass from midfield but was denied by the advancing ‘keeper.

Killowen showed signs of improvement in the second half , an exchange of passes between O’ Brien and Owen Braun set up Patrick Bermingham whose goal bound shot was gathered by the home ‘keeper. Midfielder Bermingham then tried his luck from a free kick but failed to trouble the goalkeeper.Killowen were to rue those missed chances as Fairview doubled their advantage in the 60th minute, a corner kick from the right found it’s way through a crowded area and all the way to the net. It just wasn’t Killowen’s day as the referee disallowed a seemingly perfect goal in the 62nd minute for an alleged foul on the goalkeeper. In the dying minutes Declan O’ Brien’s goal from close range was also harshly ruled out. Despite the defeat, Killowen can be pleased with the contributions of David Mc Carthy and midfielder Antoine Guy.

Killowen 1.       Crescent Athletic 3.

Killowen’s recent run of good form came to an abrupt end following a 3-1 home defeat to Crescent Athletic on Saturday. The home side showed four changes to the starting line up from the previous weeks victory at Coachford. Brian Kane, Michael Moore, Kevin Collins and Robert White were all unavailable which meant Eamonn Murphy deputised in goal, David Mc Carthy and Greg Creedon slotted into defence and Kieran Casey occupied the right hand side of midfield. Crescent enjoyed the advantage of a gale force wind in the first half as Killowen were forced to defend a number of corner kicks in the opening minutes. Killowen’s first attack came courtesy of Declan O’ Brien’s attempt on goal after 6 minutes that forced the Crescent ‘keeper into a smart save. The visitors next attack led to the opening goal after 8 minutes, the ball was worked up the left wing and a speculative cross into the area deceived the Killowen rearguard and ended up in the back of the net. Despite this setback Killowen regrouped and should have taken the lead after 15 minutes, Dave Lynch’s excellent run and cross was not capitalised on by his team mates. However, Crescent were anxious to increase their lead and it took a couple of smart saves from Murphy to keep them at bay. In contrast the visiting ‘keeper had little to do as Killowen were limited to a few long range efforts that failed to hit the target.

Declan Cassidy’s half time talk seemed to have the desired effect as Killowen were level within a minute of the restart, Kieran Casey’s delivery was directed towards Declan O’ Brien until a defender attempting to clear managed to head the ball into his own net. But Killowen’s joy was short-lived as Crescent took the lead again 2 minutes later, there seemed little danger from an attack down the right wing but some poor defending resulted in a shot from the edge of the area finding the back of the net. As weather conditions deteriorated so did Killowen’s chance of salvaging the game following a third goal for the visitors after 70 minutes, a swift break down the left wing resulted in a clinical finish from inside the area .Killowen battled gamely to the end with O’ Brien and Patrick Bermingham having goal bound efforts blocked and despite causing Crescent a few anxious moments from set pieces late on, it just wasn’t Killowen’s day.

Coachford (B) 0.           Killowen 1.

Killowen’s excellent league form continues following Saturday’s victory away to Coachford. Owen Braun was the goal scoring hero for Killowen as his 70th minute goal was the difference between the sides. However it was far from a one man show as Killowen had heroes all over the pitch, the central midfield pairing of Stephen Daly and Declan O’ Donoghue worked hard over the 90 minutes in front of a defence that was well marshalled by Dave Lynch and Eoin O’ Sullivan. It was O’ Donoghue who had Killowen’s first chance of note when his snapshot went over the bar in the 8th minute. Declan O’ Brien was next to try his luck with a well struck free kick that was parried by the home ‘keeper. Coachford were also looking lively in attack with some fine build up play, however all their good work counted for nothing as Killowen ‘keeper Brian Kane dealt capably with what they had to offer. Full back Kevin Collins went close to opening the scoring in the 15th minute as his long range free kick nearly caught the Coachford ‘keeper off guard. It was the home side who had the best scoring opportunity of the half after 25th minutes, a dangerous cross from the right wing was touched over the crossbar by Kane at the expense of a corner kick which was subsequently cleared off the line by Patrick Bermingham.

The second half saw little in the way of goal scoring opportunities as the deteriorating playing conditions hampered both sides. Killowen’s best efforts were a pair of snapshots from Owen Braun in the 65th minute. However Braun was to have better luck five minutes later, Paul Lynch’s quick throw in released Robert White whose delivery caused confusion in the home sides defence and Braun was on hand to finish with a simple tap in from close range. Coachford had it all to do now and their attacking options were severely limited minutes later when they had a player red carded following two bookable offences. Despite Coachford’s best efforts there was just no way past a determined Killowen side who held on to record their 5th league win in a row.

Killowen  3.    Mallow United  2.

Robert White’s second half strike ensured Killowen’ s fourth league win in a row following a hard earned 3-2 victory over Mallow United on Saturday. Killowen had raced into a two goal lead early on but were pegged back by a game Mallow side. The opening 20 minutes saw both sides cancel each other out with neither ‘keeper called into action. However all the action came in a frantic spell from the 25th minute, Mallow had forced three corners in a row and when Killowen successfully cleared the third it lead to a swift breakaway upfield culminating in Declan O’ Donoghue’s fine strike to the roof of the net. Killowen doubled their advantage in the 28th minute, Owen Braun’s excellent delivery from the left found Declan O’ Brien in space at the edge of the area and his powerfully struck shot flew into the bottom corner. Mallow regrouped and scored in their next attack in the 30th minute, a slide rule pass from midfield split the Killowen defence allowing the visitors centre forward to finish from close range.

Parity was restored early in the second half, a hopeful punt upfield caught the Killowen defence square and ‘keeper Brian Kane could do little as the ball was lifted over him from inside the area. Acting manager, Eamonn Murphy, reacted swiftly by introducing substitute Robert White who was to have an immediate impact. White showed his pace on the right wing in the 60th minute when he left the opposing fullback for dead but his delivery into the box just eluded his teammates. However he was to have better luck in the 65th minute, after collecting a pass in midfield he outpaced the opposing defence before finishing with a low shot to the corner of the net. Fellow substitute Brian O’ Sullivan saw his close range header cleared off the line in the 70th minute as Killowen finished the half strongly. However Mallow battled hard for an equaliser and despite forcing a succession of corners in the closing minutes there was no way past a Killowen defence in which Michael Moore and Kevin Collins excelled throughout.

Killowen  2.      Coachford (B)  1.

Killowen made it three league wins in a row as a second half brace from substitute Declan O’ Brien secured the points against visitors Coachford on Sunday afternoon. The home side showed one change in personnel from the previous week , Kevin Collins returning from injury at right back with Michael Moore reverting to the right side of midfield at the expenses of Paul Lynch. It was newly promoted Coachford who dominated the opening half and took the lead in the 5th minute, Eoin O’ Sullivan was harshly penalised for a perfectly timed tackle inside the area and the resulting penalty was converted much to the annoyance of the Killowen players and supporters. This seemed to have a negative effect on the home side as Coachford enjoyed plenty possession in the opening half but never seriously tested home ‘keeper Brian Kane.

The visitors should have extended their lead early in the second half as a close range header struck the post in the 50th minute and home ‘keeper Kane was well positioned to block a goalbound header 5 minutes later. Killowen’s first chance of note arrived on the hour mark, Declan O’ Donoghue shooting narrowly over from outside the box.  Substitutes Paul Lynch and Declan O’ Brien entered the fray with less than half an hour to play and both players were to have an immediate impact. Kieran Casey’s goal bound shot was deflected behind for a corner, Declan O’ Donoghue’s excellent delivery was handled by a Coachford defender inside the area leaving the Referee with no option but to point to the spot. Up stepped O’ Brien and he drove the penalty high into the roof of the net. It was all to play for in the final 20 minutes and the result was settled thanks to stunning strike from O’ Brien after 75 minutes. There seemed to be little on  when he picked up a loose ball outside the area but he made room for himself and unleashed a powerful strike into the top corner. Coachford were now desperate for an equaliser and after forcing a succession of corners it took a point blank save from Brian Kane to deny Coachford a certain goal after 86 minutes.

Crescent Athletic  0.     Killowen  4.

Killowen made the short trip to Monard for Sunday’s A.U.L. 2A encounter with Crescent Athletic and came away with maximum points following a comprehensive 4-0 victory. Killowen’s starting line up showed two changes from the previous weeks game, Robert White and Denis O’ Regan were unavailable and were replaced by Paul Lynch and debutant Michael Moore who had a fine outing at right back. It was Moore who had Killowen’s first chance of note in the 12th minute, his surging run from deep took him into the opposing penalty area where his left footed effort was saved by the home ‘keeper. Killowen were dominating the early stages, Declan O’ Donoghue broke quickly from midfield but shot over from a good position after 15 minutes, O’ Donoghue’s well flighted corner kick found Brian O’ Sullivan whose close range header strike the upright with half an hour played. The relentless pressure finally paid off in the closing minutes of the half, Paul Lynch’s neat turn and pass released Patrick Bermingham whose left footed shot flew into the top corner. The advantage was doubled a minute later, a long ball from Greg Creedon caused panic in the Crescent rearguard and Paul Lynch was on hand to apply the faintest of touches to divert it past the keeper. Bermingham almost made it 3-0 in the final seconds when he raced onto Kieran Casey’s pass but shot narrowly wide from inside the area.

The home side showed signs of improvement in the opening stages of the 2nd half but  were facing a Killowen side that were dominating all over the pitch. With barely a minute played Brian O’ Sullivan made ground down the right wing and his cross was met by Bermingham who unfortunately didn’t trouble the keeper on this occasion. Crescent’s first opportunity arrived after 50 minutes,  a well struck free kick from the edge of the area which was comfortably dealt with by Killowen custodian Brian Kane. The game was ended as a contest after 65 minutes, O’ Donoghue notching his third goal in as many games with a powerful drive from inside the area. Crescent still battled gamely and Kane had to be at his best in the 80th minute diving low to his left to divert a goal bound effort. The fourth goal arrived with 5 minutes left on the clock, O’ Donoghue’s pass released fellow midfielder Stephen Daly who broke clear from the opposing defence and slotted the ball into the far corner past the exposed ‘keeper. Crescent were denied a consolation goal in the 88th minute, Dave Lynch and Greg Creedon combining to prevent a certain goal for the home side.

Strand United 0.  Killowen  2.

Late goals from Declan O’ Brien and Declan O’ Donoghue secured Killowen’s first points of the campaign following a hard fought encounter with local rivals Strand United on Saturday afternoon. The heavy underfoot conditions tested both sides fitness and ability but spectators were still treated to an entertaining contest . Strand were on the offensive from the first whistle, two goalbound attempts in the opening 10 minutes were saved by Killowen ‘keeper Brian Kane. However Killowen finally settled with Robert White and Denis O’ Regan combining well on the right flank forcing Strand on the backfoot for long periods of the opening half. In the 15th minute, fine work by O’ Regan was not rewarded as his excellent delivery across the Strand goalmouth was not capitalised on by his team-mates. Debutant Kieran Casey was impressing on the opposite wing and his cross found the unmarked Brian O’ Sullivan whose header failed to trouble the Strand custodian. The home side had the final chance of the half, a speculative cross form the right striking the top of Kane’s crossbar and dropping behind for a goal kick.

On the resumption the home side were forced to defend for long periods as Killowen’s midfield quartet of Stephen Daly, Casey, O’ Donoghue and O’ Regan dominated proceedings but their good work failed to yield a goal. Strand coped with what Killowen had to offer as the game seemed to be drifting towards stalemate. With the game there for the taking, Killowen manager Declan Cassidy introduced Declan O’ Brien and Con Morrissey  to the fray and both were to have an immediate impact. Substitute Morrissey was involved in the action straight away, his clever flick released Greg Creedon but his attempt was blocked by the overworked home defence. However Morrissey’s next involvement was to lead to the opening goal after 83 minutes, he picked up a loose ball in the box and as he made strides towards goal he was hacked down by a Strand defender. A double blow for Strand as the Referee pointed to the spot and issued a red card to the offending player, Killowen took full advantage as Declan O’ Brien made no mistake from the spot. The numerical advantage began to show in the final minutes as Killowen continued to push forward, O’ Brien hit the bar and had a goal disallowed in addition to O’ Regan also striking the woodwork. The pressure finally took its toll as Declan O’ Donoghue made it 2-0 on the stroke of full time, his powerful strike from 25 yards capping a memorable day for Killowen who had not won at the Ballyanley venue for many seasons.

Killowen  1.  Millstreet Celtic 3.

Killowen still remain pointless after Sundays defeat at the hands of Millstreet Celtic. Manager Declan Cassidy made five changes to the starting line-up with the returning David Lynch and debutant Kevin Collins slotting into the back four. Paul Lynch and Declan O’ Donoghue returned in midfield with the vastly experienced Owen Braun partnering Brian O’ Sullivan up front. Killowen started brightly with Patrick Bermingham prominent on the left wing, his excellent delivery in the 5th minute causing problems for the Millstreet custodian who needed assistance from his defenders to clear the danger. The early pressure continued as Owen Braun kept the Millstreet defence on their toes, his cross from the left hand side of the box was deflected onto the crossbar after 7 minutes. The same player  then struck the crossbar from close range and also had a header cleared off the line as Killowen dominated the opening 15 minutes of his game. However Millstreet were to take the lead against the run of play in the 20th minute, a hopeful punt upfield was not dealt with by the Killowen defence and as the ball bounced in the area, an opposing forward was up-ended leaving the referee with no choice but to point to the spot. The kick was duly despatched giving the visitors renewed hope which yielded a 2nd goal right on the stroke of half time.

Home ‘keeper Brian Kane denied Millstreet a 3rd goal with a point blank save early in the 2nd half, Killowen regrouped and pulled a goal back after 56 minutes. Patrick Bermingham’s well struck free kick was parried by the ‘keeper and Declan O’ Donoghue was on hand to tap home the rebound. Spurred on by the goal, Killowen pressed hard for an equaliser, Bermingham shot narrowly over after 60 minutes and Brian O’ Sullivan headed narrowly wide from Denis O’ Regan’s well delivered cross. However it was not Killowen’s day and this was summed up in the 80th minute, a long range shot from Kevin Collins was spilled by the visitors ‘keeper into the path of Braun but his goalbound effort was hacked clear by the retreating defence. With the home side now committing extra bodies in attack, Millstreet took advantage with a breakaway goal after 82 minutes to put the result beyond doubt.

Mallow Utd. 4   Killowen 1.

No early season joy for Killowen following an opening day defeat away to Mallow United on Sunday morning. Despite the visitors taking an early lead through new signing David Mc Carthy, it was Mallow who dominated the opening half but their superiority was not reflected on the scoreboard. Killowen survived the onslaught and managed to protect their slender lead until early in the 2nd half when an unfortunate O.G. led to Mallow’s equaliser. Mallow’s superior fitness proved to be the difference in the 2nd half and this was backed up with 3 further goals to secure victory.

Killowen  0       Rylane  2.

Two second half goals secured victory for promotion chasing Rylane following Sunday’s clash with Killowen. This victory all but assures Rylane of 1st division football next season but they were pushed all the way by a determined Killowen side. Both sides cancelled each other out in the first half with Rylane cursing their luck after striking the woodwork twice in the opening 20 minutes. Killowen also had their moments, Patrick Bermingham’s long range free kick and a Terry Sweeney close range header causing anxious moments for Rylane. Despite Killowen’s strong first half showing, it was the visitors who were dominating the early stages of the second half but were thwarted by home ‘keeper Brian Kane and centre half Owen Braun on numerous occasions. However the stalemate was finally broken after 65 minutes as Rylane bundled the ball home from a corner kick. Killowen fought hard for an equaliser with Bermingham and Donal Buckley prominent on the wings but failed to capitalise on a number of chances in front of goal. Rylane finished strongly and added a second goal in the closing moments, a long clearance upfield was touched home from inside the area past the exposed Kane.

Killowen  3.      Donoughmore Athletic  3.

Mid Cork rivals, Killowen and Donoughmore Athletic shared 6 goals after an entertaining A.U.L. 2A clash at the Killowen venue. The tone was set from the first whistle as both sides were committed to attack, Killowen forced a number of early corners but failed to trouble the Donoughmore ‘keeper and it was the visitors who grabbed the opening goal in the 15th minute. There seemed to be little danger as Killowen defended a Donoughmore throw in but a speculative shot form distance found its way to the net past the unsighted Brian Kane. The lead lasted only 10 minutes as Killowen were back on level terms courtesy of Michael Murphy’s powerfully struck free kick from 25 yards.  Killowen grabbed the lead 2 minutes later as man of the match Murphy crossed for Patrick Bermingham to head home from close range. The home side were playing with renewed confidence and Paul Lynch almost made it 3-1 but his looping header struck the crossbar after 35 minutes. Donoughmore weathered the storm and drew level 5 minutes before the interval, Killowen’s defending from a corner kick was not up to scratch and the ball was volleyed goalwards from close range. However Killowen had the final chance of the half as Owen Braun’s cross from the left just evaded the inrushing Con Morrissey. The game swung in Donoughmore’s favour early in the 2nd half, a powerfully struck free kick was parried by home ‘keeper Kane and the rebound was tapped in from close range to make it 3-2. Killowen’s battling qualities were evident in the final quarter, Michael Murphy tested the ‘keeper with 2 long range shots and it was no surprise that an equaliser arrived in the 70th minute. Killowen worked the ball up the left wing to Greg Creedon and his pass found Shane O’ Brien in the area, his low cross caused panic in the Donoughmore ranks resulting in a defender putting the ball past his own keeper. Donoughmore should have added a 4th goal in the 80th minute, Killowen were caught shorthanded in defence with 3 attackers bearing down on goal but Eoin Scannell and custodian Kane combined to avert the danger. Terry Sweeney almost snatched a winner for Killowen in the dying moments but his effort from a Creedon delivery did not trouble the visitors ‘keeper.

Killowen  1       Waterloo  3.

A brace of goals in the opening 10 minutes set Waterloo on their way to victory over local rivals Killowen on Sunday last. Killowen never recovered from this setback despite forcing numerous corners and enjoying long spells of possession over the 90 minutes. Waterloo’s efficiency in defence and midfield coupled with an outstanding display from ‘keeper Brian O’ Mahony prevented any hopes of a Killowen comeback.. Robert White went close in the 1st minute for the home side but Waterloo grabbed the opening goal after 4 minutes courtesy of Denis O’ Mahony’s powerful free kick. O’ Mahony notched his and Waterloo’s second after 10 minutes when he broke clear from his marker and his low shot flew past John O’ Sullivan in the Killowen goal. Killowen then proceeded to enjoy their best period of the match as a succession of corners had the visitors on the back foot. Owen Braun was central to most of Killowen’s attacking options and his duel with the Waterloo custodian was one of the highlights of the game. Paul Lynch, Terence O’ Rourke and Eoin O’ Sullivan were also laying siege to the Waterloo goal but Killowen somehow ended the half scoreless.

It should have been 3-0 after 50 minutes but O’ Sullivan was quick of his line to deny O’ Mahony his hat-trick as the striker ran unopposed towards goal. However the game was ended as a contest after 65 minutes, a long range free from the touchline deceived O’ Sullivan in goal and  an inrushing Waterloo player tapped in from close range. Killowen battled on and Owen Braun was rewarded for his efforts with a goal in the 70th minute, Declan O’ Donoghue’s pass put him in the clear and he rounded the advancing ‘keeper before chipping the ball over the retreating defenders. Braun was also involved in the final piece of action but he shot narrowly wide form a tight angle in the 90th minute.

Kanturk (B)  0   Killowen  0.  After extra time. (Killowen won 4-2 on penalties)

Killowen’s greater accuracy from the penalty spot ensured progress to the next round of the County Cup following Sunday’s assignment away to Kanturk. Both teams contributed to an entertaining game that somehow failed to produce a goal as both sides were guilty of some wayward finishing. Robert White was keeping the Kanturk defence busy as his pace and trickery created openings but unfortunately his finishing did not match the approach work. Kanturk caused a few anxious moments for the Killowen rearguard but centre halves Terry Sweeney and Owen Braun dealt capably with Kanturk’s efforts. Right back Donal Buckley also had a fine outing and combined his defensive duties with some powerful attacking bursts especially in the second half. The stalemate continued into the second half with both sides failing to convert numerous chances and this trend continued into extra time forcing both sides into the lottery of a penalty shoot out. Killowen missed the first penalty of the shoot out but Brian Kane saved Kanturk’s opening kick to level matters. Killowen held their nerve as Owen Braun, Eoin O’ Sullivan, Robert White and Eoin Scannell all converted from the spot in addition to another Brian Kane save finally bringing  a conclusion to the tie.

Killowen  1       Kanturk (A)  3.

Premier division side Kanturk were the visitors to Killowen on Sunday last and advanced to the next round of the A.O.H. cup following a hard earned victory over the locals. A brace of first half goals laid the foundations for this victory but the home side battled hard against their higher ranked opponents and were left to rue a number of missed chances in front of goal. Indeed Killowen should have opened the scoring after 10 minutes when Patrick Bermingham capitalised on some slack defending but his attempted shot towards goal was blocked by a retreating defender. Kanturk’s first chance of note came in the 17th minute as Brian Kane dived low to his left to parry a well struck free kick. Kanturk opened the scoring 5 minutes later, a low cross from the right was not cleared and the Kanturk forward netted at the second attempt despite the valiant efforts of Killowen custodian Kane. Killowen should have levelled matters after half an hour but Stephen Daly’s shot and Terry Sweeney’s header were cleared off the line by a relieved Kanturk rear-guard. Kanturk’s aerial prowess resulted in their second goal just before the interval, a well delivered cross from the left was met by a powerful header that gave Kane no chance. Killowen began the 2nd half brightly and pulled a goal back within 5 minutes of the restart, Robert White outpaced the defence and his powerful drive was touched around the post by the visiting ‘keeper. The resulting corner from Patrick Bermingham was finished to the back of the net by Paul Lynch to give Killowen a glimmer of hope. However Kanturk closed ranks at the back as Killowen struggled to create opportunities and it was the visitors who made sure of the victory with their 3rd goal of the contest after 60 minutes. Despite the defeat, Killowen can be pleased with the contributions of Terry Sweeney and Patrick Bermingham.

Millstreet Celtic  3        Killowen  0.

A trio of goals in the second half secured victory for Millstreet Celtic over visitors Killowen on Sunday last. Killowen were forced to field without 7 regulars and struggled to make an impact over the 90 minutes on what was a heavy playing surface. It was honours even after the opening 45 minutes with Michael Murphy and Patrick Bermingham having Killowen’s only efforts on target during this period. Millstreet opened the scoring early in the 2nd half, Brian Kane did well to parry a powerfully struck shot but the rebound was touched home from close range. Killowen’s best opportunities came from Denis O’ Regan and Bermingham who were a constant threat on the flanks. Bermingham’s cross from the left just eluded new signing Con Morrissey at the far post and O’ Regan’s inviting ball into the area was blocked by the ‘keeper  with Morrissey lurking dangerously in the goalmouth. Midfielder Declan O’ Donoghue tried his luck from long range as Killowen struggled to make inroads against a well organised Millstreet defence. However there was no way back for the visitors as Millstreet grabbed a 2nd goal from a corner kick midway through the half and a 3rd goal 10 minutes from time finished the game as a contest.

Fairview  1.      Killowen  1.

An entertaining contest at Monard saw the points shared between Fairview and visitors Killowen. Despite the heavy conditions both sides managed to play constructive football and goalscoring chances were plentiful. Fairview dominated in the opening minutes as last ditch tackles from Greg Creedon and Dave Lynch prevented certain goals. Fairview then struck the woodwork from a corner kick but Killowen cleared the danger. However, Killowen found their feet and with 10 minutes gone Robert White raced on to a Shane O’ Brien flick on but was thwarted by the Fairview defence at the expense of a corner. The visitors were sharp on the break and Patrick Bermingham raced clear minutes later but his lob over the advancing keeper was cleared by a covering defender. Brian Kane’s close range save after 18 minutes  prevented an opening goal but  he was finally beaten 2 minutes later. Fairview’s proficiency from set pieces was rewarded with the opening goal, a well delivered corner kick was powerfully headed home form close range. Another Fairview set piece almost paid dividends minutes later as an inswinging free kick struck the post and was cleared by a relieved Killowen defence. Killowen should have levelled matters after 40 minutes, Robert White chased a long clearance and raced clear of the defence but his shot from inside the area was blocked by the advancing ‘keeper. However he made no mistake minutes later as he made ground up the left wing and finished with a low shot to the corner of the net to bring the sides level at half time. An injury to Terence O’ Rourke early in the 2nd half saw a reshuffle in the Killowen ranks but Fairview could not make headway against Dave Lynch and Eoin Scannell who were rock solid at the heart of the Killowen defence. Michael Murphy’s introduction to the centre of midfield had the desired effect and with both sides cancelling each other out it was little surprise that there was no more goals to report.

An unhappy start to 2008 for Killowen, who were defeated 4-0 by Knockraha in the 2nd round of the Corinthians Cup on Saturday. Killowen fielded a strong side for this encounter but a series of errors led to a 2-0 deficit at half time. Despite the efforts of Dave Lynch, Killowen struggled to overcome the home sides challenge and the concession of 2 further goals in the second period ensured Knockraha’s progression to the next round.

Shanavoher  0. Killowen  1.

A goal in the 30th minute from influential midfielder Michael Murphy proved to be the match winner as Killowen recorded a much needed victory against Bweeng based side Shanavoher. Conditions were far from ideal but both sides contributed to a hard fought contest that was not lacking in endeavour or incident. Killowen had an early let off as a Shanavoher free kick rolled across the goalmouth but there was no opposing player on hand to take advantage. Killowen’s Eoin O’ Sullivan showed his dead ball expertise after 10 minutes when his free kick from 30 yards struck the crossbar. The visitors made light work of the conditions and a quick break from defence led to Greg Creedon’s powerful drive forcing the home ‘keeper into a fine save. Killowen were now dictating matters and the Shanavoher custodian was called into action again as he smothered Robert White’s low shot after 20 minutes. The decisive goal arrived on the half hour mark, Patrick Bermingham’s well delivered corner kick was sidefooted home from 6 yards by the inrushing Michael Murphy to give the visitors a deserving half time lead.

The strong wind was to Shanavoher’s advantage in the 2nd half and Killowen’s defensive qualities were severely tested. Regular ‘keeper Brian Kane was back between the posts for Killowen and he showed his class with a fine tip over from a Shanavoher free kick after 50 minutes. Michael Murphy almost made it 2-0 minutes later but he dragged his shot wide following a surging run into the opposing penalty area. Killowen dealt with what the home side had to offer but survived a couple of late scares. Kane had to punch clear another free kick after 70 minutes and Dave Lynch was on hand to deny the home side a certain goal with 15 minutes left to play. It should have been game over for the visitors in the 80th minute, the hardworking Paul Lynch made ground down the right wing and his cross was met by Bermingham who saw his effort blocked at the near post. It mattered little as Killowen saw out the remaining minutes to record their first away win of the season and move up the rankings in A.U.L. 2A.

Killowen 3.       Ballincollig (B) 1.

Killowen advanced to the next round of the Corinthians Cup following a 3-1 victory over Ballincollig (B) on Sunday last. A brace from Declan O’ Brien and a late strike from Robert White was enough to see off the Ballincollig challenge. Assistant manager Eamonn Murphy  was between the posts for Killowen and he was called into action early on as he denied the visitors with two point blank saves in the space of a minute. A much changed Killowen team took time to settle and were lucky not to be in arrears as Ballincollig struck the crossbar after 10 minutes. The visitors wasted another good opportunity after 12 minutes and were made to pay for this minutes later as Killowen struck for the lead goal, Declan O’ Brien accepted a pass on the edge of the area and his well struck shot deceived the opposing ‘keeper. Dave Lynch and Shane O’ Brien were very prominent in the first half as Killowen finally managed to get on top. However, Ballincollig should have levelled matters in the 40th minute, a well delivered corner kick rolled invitingly across the goalmouth but there was no one in position to take advantage.

Top scorer O’ Brien made it 2-0 after 52 minutes, his powerfully struck free kick was too hot to handle for the Ballincollig keeper who only succeeded in fumbling the ball over the line.  Ballincollig proceeded to strike the crossbar for a second time minutes later as the visitors committed extra men to attack. O’Brien should have secured his hat-trick after 60 minutes but his left footed effort was too high. Home ‘keeper Murphy was finally beaten in the 70th minute as continuous Ballincollig pressure resulted in a strike from close range. The introduction of Robert White had the desired effect for Killowen as his pace had the visitors defence stretched. He outpaced the defence after 80 minutes but his shot from inside the area shaved the far post. Ballincollig forced a succession of corners in the final minutes but could not find a way past a Killowen rear-guard that was well marshalled by the excellent Eoin Scannell. The victory was sealed in the last minute, Ballincollig were exposed at the back as a corner was cleared to White who ran unchallenged from the halfway line to finish to an unguarded goal.

Passage (A)  5              Killowen 0.

Table toppers Passage continued their good form in A.U.L. 2A following a 5-0 victory over visitors Killowen. The final scoreline does not tell the full story as Killowen were well in contention for much of the first half with Eoin O’ Sullivan and Declan O’ Brien both hitting the woodwork and O’ Sullivan also denied by the home ‘keeper who touched his powerful shot over the bar. Passage had the tonic of an early goal after 5 minutes but it was the visitors who dominated proceedings until a double lapse in concentration allowed Passage to score twice in a matter of minutes before the interval.

Any hopes of a comeback for the visitors were quashed with a fourth Passage goal 10 minutes into the second half but Killowen kept plugging away as both Declan O’ Brien and Stephen Daly had efforts narrowly off target. Passage added a fifth goal in the dying moments to end an unhappy trip down the harbour for Killowen.

Strand United  4                       Killowen  4

Local rivals Strand United and Killowen shared eight goals in an entertaining clash at Ballyanley on Saturday. Due to injuries and other commitments, Killowen showed 6 changes from the side that tasted victory in the A.O.H. cup the previous weekend. The changes mattered little as Killowen raced into the lead after 7 minutes, Michael Murphy’s long range shot struck the crossbar but Patrick Doyle was on hand to steer the rebound home from a tight angle. Strand recovered from that setback with an equalising goal after 35 minutes. The home side took the lead 2 minutes later with a close range header from a corner kick but the Killowen response was immediate, man of the match Murphy levelling matters with a looping header from the edge of the box.

Killowen were back in the ascendancy after 55 minutes, Patrick Bermingham’s corner kick caused confusion in the home defence and Murphy notched his second goal with another well taken header. However the lead did not last long as Strand were level within a minute, a powerful volley from the edge of the area flew past a line of Killowen defenders and the unsighted John O’ Sullivan in goal. Strand could sense victory but were finding it hard to find a way past a Killowen defence for whom Dave Lynch and Denis O’ Regan excelled. But the pressure took it’s toll and Strand regained the lead after 70 minutes with a well placed shot from inside the area. However Killowen refused to throw in the towel as the impressive Doyle took the ball around the keeper but the angle was too tight for a shot. However Killowen finally managed an equaliser in added time, there seemed to be little danger for Strand when the visitors were awarded a free kick close to the touchline but  Patrick Bermingham’s inswinging free kick flew into the top corner to rescue a point for a hardworking Killowen side.

28/10/07. A.O.H. Cup.

Killowen 3        Park United (B) 2.

Killowen advanced to the next round of the A.O.H. cup following a 3-2 victory over Park United (B) on Sunday last. This was a great victory for Killowen as the Mitchelstown based team , now under the astute management of former Killowen player Kieran Duggan, are well placed in division 1A of the A.U.L. However it was not a happy return for Duggan as his side just came up short against a Killowen side recording their second win in a row. The opening half saw the action swing from end to end, Shane O’ Brien went close for Killowen after 2 minutes but his headed effort cleared the crossbar while at the other end, Brian Kane was in action early on with two fine saves to keep Park at bay. The opening goal did not take long to arrive, Killowen were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area after 12 minutes, Declan O’ Brien assumed responsibility and he curled his shot around the wall into the bottom corner to put his side 1-0 up. However the goal seemed to wake the visitors up as they proceeded to strike the post after 15 minutes and a timely intervention from Greg Creedon prevented a certain goal after 23 minutes. Killowen weathered the storm and extended their lead after half an hour, Eoin O’ Sullivan picked up a loose ball in midfield and his powerful shot from 25 yards left the opposing ‘keeper helpless. Park continued to impress in attack and Kane produced another fine save after 36 minutes but he was finally beaten 4 minutes later, Park worked the ball into the area and held their composure to beat Kane with a well placed shot. Killowen substitute Robert White made an immediate impact when he raced clear from the opposing defence but was foiled by the advancing ‘keeper.

With the game finally balanced, the next goal was going to be critical and it was the home side who restored their two goal advantage after 48 minutes. Man of the match Denis O’ Regan supplied the pass and Declan O’ Brien calmly rolled the ball past the advancing keeper to swing the game firmly in Killowen’s favour. The North Cork side kept battling away and made it 3-2 after 55 minutes, a long ball into the area caused confusion in the Killowen ranks and the loose ball was struck to the net from close range. There was no let up in the action as the Park custodian denied Declan O’ Brien his hat-trick by smothering his goalbound shot after 65 minutes. Both sides were showing great commitment to the cause and it was unfortunate that the referee had to dismiss a player from each side after 68 minutes following an altercation in midfield. That seemed to take the sting out of the game and Killowen held on to record their second victory in this years competition.

Killowen 3.       Fairview 1.

Killowen recorded their first league win of the season following a 3-1 victory over Fairview on Sunday last. A brace from regular marksman Declan O’ Brien and a single strike form Denis O’ Regan did the trick for the mid Cork side. While the goalscorers may get the plaudits, the foundations for this victory were based on the solid displays of ‘keeper John O’ Sullivan and his defensive quartet. Indeed O’ Sullivan was called into action as early as the first minute as he tipped a long range Fairview shot over the bar. Fairview were having the better of the opening exchanges and were denied by another O’ Sullivan save after 10 minutes. However Killowen gradually got to the pace of the game and were awarded a penalty after 15 minutes following a push on Dave Lynch inside the penalty area. Declan O’ Brien’s first attempt was saved but he made no mistake from the rebound to put the home side ahead. Killowen were now in control and Patrick Bermingham almost doubled their advantage but his goalbound header was cleared off the line. Killowen’s second goal arrived on the half hour mark as Denis O’ Regan was on target form inside the area with a well struck shot.

With Owen Braun impressing in midfield and full back’s Eoin Scannell and Greg Creedon in top form, it was little surprise that Killowen added to their tally courtesy of O’ Brien’s powerful strike from the edge of the area after 50 minutes. Fairview refused to throw in the towel and their hard work was rewarded with a goal after 65 minutes. That goal was only a consolation as Terence O’ Rourke and Dave Lynch proved to be unbeatable at the heart of a Killowen defence that had to withstand some late Fairview pressure. It was left to O’ Sullivan to have the final say in matters as his two late saves finally killed off the spirited challenge from the visitors.

Killowen 3        Shanavoher 3.

Despite holding a three goal advantage, Killowen had to settle for a share of the points with visitors Shanavoher on Sunday last. Killowen started brightly and were ahead after 10 minutes, Paul Lynch’s shot from inside the area was blocked but Declan O’ Donoghue was on hand to steer the rebound home from close range. The home sides passing and movement had Shanavoher in all sorts of bother and it was little surprise the Killowen added to their tally after 20th minutes. Midfielder Stephen Daly’s pass released Paul Lynch and his cross from the left found Patrick Bermingham who tapped in at the far post. It was 3-0 minutes later as Bermingham’s inswinging free kick took a wicked deflection before hitting the net. Shanavoher refused to lie down and after hitting the bar in the 30th minute, they managed to pull a goal back just before the interval.

The margin was down to a single goal in the 46th minute as Shanavoher scored from close range after an original attempt had struck the post. Killowen steadied the ship until the 60th minute when poor marking from a set piece resulted in a free header and the equalising goal for the visitors. With time running out both sides battled for a winner, Robert White set up Owen Braun but he shot over from close range while at the other end John O’ Sullivan got down to block a goalbound shot in the dying minutes

30/09/07. A.O.H. Cup.

Killowen 3        Blackstone Rovers 2.

A superbly taken goal by Michael Murphy, ensured Killowen’s progress in the A.O.H. cup following a hard earned 3-2 victory over Blackstone Rovers. Manager Declan Cassidy  was forced into naming a much changed side from the previous week due to injuries and other commitments. Despite the changes in personnel, Killowen showed great determination in coming from behind twice to finally taste victory. Blackstone settled first and home ‘keeper Brian Kane was forced to touch a long range shot onto the post after 5 minutes, Kane was kept on his toes as he foiled the visitors with a superb point blank save after 15 minutes. Killowen had their first attack of note minutes earlier when Paul Lynch sidefooted narrowly wide after good work by Shane O’ Brien. However it was the visitors who finished the half stronger , Kane was smartly off his line to deny a clear goalscoring opportunity for the visitors after 30 minutes and he was finally beaten 6 minutes later as Blackstone netted from the penalty spot following an indiscretion in the area. The goal stirred Killowen into action and Eoin O’ Sullivan went close to equalising before the interval but his free kick cleared the crossbar.

Killowen were level within 5 minutes of the restart, Paul Lynch’s pass released Shane O’ Brien and he made no mistake from close range. But Blackstone regained the lead 10 minutes later, a quickly taken free kick unhinged the Killowen defence and a powerful shot from inside the area flew past substitute ‘keeper Eamonn Murphy  who had earlier replaced the injured Kane. Killowen then had claims for a penalty rejected by the referee as Paul Lynch was up-ended in the box as he raced on to O’ Brien’s defence splitting pass. Killowen were now on top at midfield where Declan O’ Donoghue and Michael Murphy were now more prominent and both were to have a hand in the two late goals that settled the game. The equaliser arrived in the 75th minute, O’ Donoghue picked up the ball in the middle of the park and his pass released Patrick Bermingham on the left wing, his cross to the far post was met by the inrushing Dave Lynch who showed great bravery in heading the ball goalwards. Victory was secured 5 minutes later, Killowen again attacked down the left and when a clearance from defence reached Michael Murphy on the corner of the area, his precise chip gave the retreating ‘keeper no chance. Blackstone pushed forward in search of an equaliser as Eamonn Murphy was forced into action twice in the closing minutes, firstly turning away a free kick and then parrying a close range shot. However Killowen weathered the storm and now progress to the next round.

Donoughmore Athletic  2         Killowen  1.

A highly competitive clash saw Donoughmore edge out local rivals Killowen on Sunday last. Killowen started well, with Owen Braun very prominent up front and he was central to Killowen’s good play in the opening stages. His cross from the right wing found the unmarked Michael Murphy who shot narrowly over after 5 minutes, Declan O’ Donoghue then shot wide after more good work by Braun after 10 minutes. Donoughmore finally got into their stride and almost scored form a corner after 15 minutes and a quick counter attack almost yielded a goal minutes later. Their ability to break quickly from defence led to the opening goal after 20 minutes, the ball was switched to the right wing and a well delivered cross from the endline was turned home from close range. The lead did not last long as Killowen were level within 5 minutes, Patrick Bermingham’s powerful shot struck the crossbar but Paul Lynch was on hand to head in the rebound for a deserved equaliser. The impressive Michael Murphy clipped the crossbar with a long range shot and O’ Donoghue was narrowly off target as Killowen finished the half on the offensive.

The second half replicated the first with both teams pushing forward at every opportunity, however Killowen suffered a setback as Owen Braun was unable to resume for the second period due to injury. Killowen ‘keeper Brian Kane got down well to smother a well struck shot after 46 minutes as Donoughmore continued to impress on the attack. Killowen had their moments too, Dave Lynch’s superb cross form the wing rolled across the Donoughmore goalmouth but none of his team-mates were in position to avail of the opportunity. The Donoughmore ‘keeper then showed his class after 60 minutes by tipping over a powerfully struck free kick from Murphy. Killowen were to regret those missed chances as it was Donoughmore who got the all important lead goal with 20 minutes left, a corner on the right caused confusion in the Killowen ranks and despite Eoin Scannell’s goalline clearance the ball was returned into the danger area and squeezed into the net from close range. It was heartbreak for Killowen and it could have been worse as minutes later Donoughmore had legitimate claims for a penalty rejected by the Referee. Despite Killowen committing extra numbers forward in the closing stages, Donoughmore held firm at the back to record the win.

Killowen 1.     Passage A 2.

Passage (A) continued their good start to the season following a hard earned victory over Killowen on Sunday last. It took an 80th minute penalty to decide this game in the visitors favour as the hosts battled gamely over the 90 minutes. Despite the warm temperatures both sides were full of running and Killowen got into their stride early on with Eoin O’ Sullivan testing the Passage ‘keeper with a long range shot after 10 minutes. The action swung to the other end of the field as Terence O’ Rourke’s timely intervention denied Passage a certain goal after 12 minutes. However, the opening goal arrived on the quarter hour mark, Michael Murphy’s right wing cross was met by Owen Braun and his downward header deceived the Passage ‘keeper. Murphy was impressing on the right wing and his shot flew across the goalmouth after 20 minutes but Passage responded and were denied an equaliser by Brian Kane’s brave block inside the area. However the equaliser arrived soon after as some fine passing in midfield opened up the Killowen defence resulting in the visitors hitting the target from close range. Passage then had strong claims for a penalty turned down as Killowen finished the half strongly, Braun shot wide from inside the box and Dave Lynch saw his header cleared off the line.

Killowen resumed on the offensive and had a number of chances to regain the lead, Braun headed narrowly wide after 47 minutes, Lynch’s powerful strike was tipped around the post on 65 minutes and Braun was cursing his luck again after 70 minutes as his header hit the crossbar. Killowen were to regret those misses as Passage took the lead after 80 minutes from the penalty spot. The visitors were not finished yet and home ‘keeper Kane prevented a third goal five minutes later as he tipped over a close range header. Killowen pressed hard for an equaliser in the closing minutes but Passage held firm at he back to claim the 3 points.

Killowen 1        Strand United 3.

Local rivals Killowen and Strand United squared up to each other on Saturday and it was the men from Inniscarra parish who went home the happier following a 3-1 victory. Both sides contributed to a fine contest which saw plenty goalmouth action. Michael Murphy’s long range free kick tested the Strand ‘keeper after 5 minutes as Killowen settled first and a better opportunity was spurned in the 10th minute,  Owen Braun’s cross from the right was heading towards the unmarked Robert White in the box but a timely block from a Strand defender averted the danger. Strand’s first opportunity arrived in the 15th minute, a close range free kick was blocked by home ‘keeper John O’ Sullivan who was deputising for the injured Brian Kane. Killowen then had a goal ruled out for offside as the visitors grabbed the lead goal after 20 minutes, a well flighted corner was headed home from close range. The action swung from end to end with both sides committed to attack, Owen Braun crossed from the right but Eoin O’ Sullivan’s shot was blocked and Strand broke quickly from defence but were thwarted by John O’ Sullivan’s smart save. The equaliser arrived just before the break, O’ Sullivan’s long kickout was collected by Braun on the right and his cross was finished to the net by Robert White to leave the sides deadlocked at the interval.

Killowen failed to build on their first half display and it was the visitors who enjoyed long periods of dominance during the second half. However the home side soaked up the pressure thanks to Terence O’ Rourke’s superb performance in the centre of defence. Killowen’s best chance of this period fell to Dave Lynch but he headed narrowly wide from inside the area after 65 minutes. It was Strand who finished the stronger and 2 goals in the final ten minutes sealed the victory. The first goal arrived after 80 minutes, Strand broke quickly down the right and a well delivered cross was sidefooted to the net from 6 yards out. Strand saved the best till last as a powerfully struck free kick from the edge of the area nestled in the top corner to make it 3-1.

Waterloo 2        Killowen 2.

Killowen began life in AUL 2A with a local derby against Waterloo and had to settle for a point despite leading 2-0 at the interval. Manager Declan Cassidy gave debuts to new signings Robert White and Denis O’ Regan and both players impressed over the 90 minutes. Mick Murphy had Killowen’s first chance after 10 minutes, a corner kick from the left was not cleared and his shot from inside the area flashed wide. The visitors were dominating the opening stages of this contest and deservedly took the lead after 20 minutes, Owen Braun’s well delivered free kick found Stephen Daly at the far post and his powerful shot gave the home ‘keeper no chance. However that goal sparked Waterloo into life and Killowen ‘keeper Brian Kane was called into action with two fine saves in the space of a minute. Killowen weathered the storm and Daly tested the home keeper with a well struck shot after 30 minutes and the second goal arrived 5 minutes later courtesy of Owen Braun who headed home Eoin O’ Sullivan’s corner from close range. Killowen finished the half stronger as White saw his long range effort saved and O’ Sullivan’s powerful shot struck the underside of the crossbar.

A number of enforced substitutions on the Killowen side was to have an immediate effect as Waterloo dominated the opening period of the second half. As a result Killowen struggled to establish a foothold on the game and Waterloo struck for two goals in a minute to draw level. A low cross from the right found the net following a wicked deflection after 65 minutes and Waterloo’s equaliser was fired home from inside the box after Brian Kane had parried a powerfully struck free kick. Both sides fought hard for a winner but with both defences on top chances were few and far between. Killowen almost snatched a winner in added time but Paul Lynch’s header drifted wide.

Killowen are champions of A.U.L. 3A for the 2006/ 2007 season. After
22 league games, Killowen’s record of 15 wins and 3 draws yielded 48 points
which was enough to take the title. The foundations for this success were
laid back in July as manager Declan Cassidy and his assistant Eamonn Murphy
put the squad through a gruelling preseason training schedule that paid
dividends as the season progressed. Killowen made a great start as a 5-0
win away to Keim F.C. was followed by 3 successive victories until local
rivals Ard Na Laoi ended the sequence. However, a draw away to C.F.C.
Banteer and a home win over Doneraile saw Killowen back on track. After a
long period of inactivity due to the inclement weather, Killowen began the
new year  with 6 wins in a row including a tremendous 3-0 victory away to
Macroom and a 10-0 victory away to Killford.  Despite a late season hiccup
against Cork Road Celtic, Killowen ended the season with a 6 match unbeaten
run that saw wins against fellow contenders Coachford and a memorable last
minute victory over Macroom that all but secured the title. Killowen were
confirmed as champions on May 20th as Killford were unable to field a team
for the scheduled fixture at the Killowen venue. The trophy was presented
to joint captains Stephen Daly and Eoin O’ Sullivan amid scenes of joy
amongst players and supporters. The Killowen manager  Declan Cassidy  paid
tribute to his players afterwards, he stated,  “the players were rewarded
for their efforts in training and on matchdays and are a credit to the
club”.
The addition of some new faces before and during the season,
strengthened the squad and the competition for places was intense. Brian
Kane established himself as the first choice ‘keeper and acquitted himself
very well, he was assisted by a defence that conceded only 20 goals over
the campaign as Eoin Scannell, Dave Lynch, Terence O’ Rourke and Greg
Creedon were the regulars in this sector. Michael Murphy captained the side
from midfield until injury ended his season. Declan O’ Donoghue was a
fixture in the middle of the field throughout the season and in Murphy’s
absence was partnered by Eoin O’ Sullivan and Stephen Daly on occasions.
Patrick Doyle and Darren Mc Sweeney were signed midway during the season
and both players made vital contributions to this success. Killowen netted
53 league goals during the season and 13 different players contributed to
this tally. Manager Declan Cassidy was spoilt for selection in the forward
line as Declan O’ Brien (10), Owen Braun (9), Patrick Bermingham (8) and
Paul Lynch (2) all featured in the scoring stakes.

Killowen 1 Macroom (B) 0

It took a stunning free kick in added time from Killowen’s Declan O’
Brien to settle this top of the table clash between Killowen and visitors
Macroom on Sunday last. In what was a lively contest both sides had chances
early on, Macroom forced a number of corners and almost took the lead after
5 minutes but Eoin Scannell saved the home side with a timely goal line
clearance. The impressive Patrick Doyle headed over from six yards out in
what was Killowen’s first attack of note after 10 minutes.Another header
from Doyle had the Macroom ‘keeper at full stretch with 25 minutes played.
But, Macroom, fresh from their President’s Cup victory, were enjoying
plenty success on the wings but their fine build up play was spoiled by
some wayward finishing. However, Killowen finally got to the pace of the
game as Doyle and Eoin O’ Sullivan were now prominent in midfield and Paul
Lynch was now making an impression upfront. Macroom’s poor finishing in
front of goal was evident again in the 40th minute, a well delivered cross
from the left was met with a tame header into the arms home ‘keeper Brian
Kane. Killowen almost made the breakthrough before half time, the lively
Darren Mc Sweeney saw his goalbound shot blocked and he then shot into the
side netting from a good position.
Macroom had the first effort of the second half but were foiled by
Kane’s point blank save in the 60th minute as the visitors struggled to
make inroads against a solid Killowen defence for whom Terence O’ Rourke
and Dave Lynch excelled throughout. Indeed Lynch found time to venture
forward but his shot from distance drifted wide of the post. With defences
now on top, both sides were reduced to long range shooting but neither
‘keeper was seriously tested. As the game drifted towards its conclusion
and the inevitable stalemate, Declan O’ Brien broke clear from the Macroom
defence and his progress towards goal was ended when he was fouled at the
edge of the area. The referee dismissed the offending player and awarded
Killowen a free kick in a very favourable position. Up stepped O’ Brien and
his powerful strike found the bottom corner of the net to send the Killowen
management and supporters wild with joy.

A minutes silence was observed prior to kick off in memory of the late Mrs.
Mary Dilworth (R.I.P.) who was a life long supporter of the Killowen club.

Kanturk (B) 1 Killowen 1.

Kanturk and visitors Killowen shared the points following a
hard fought encounter at the Kanturk venue on Sunday last. With both
defences in top form, goalscoring chances were few and far between. Kanturk
started brightly and should have taken the lead mid way through the half
but were denied by a timely goal line clearance from Owen Braun. Patrick
Bermingham had Killowen’s only efforts on goal during the opening period,
his close range shot was blocked by the home keeper and a powerful shot
from distance was comfortably dealt with. The deadlock was finally broken
after 60 minutes, Greg Creedon’s pass released Dave Lynch whose forceful
run was abruptly ended in the penalty area. Up stepped Eoin O’ Sullivan and
he made no mistake from the spot to give Killowen the advantage. However,
Kanturk, who had genuine claims for a penalty rejected, grabbed an
equaliser after 65 minutes following a mix up in the Killowen defence.
Killowen pushed forward in search of a winner and Lynch saw his long range
effort brilliantly tipped over by the Kanturk custodian after 80 minutes.
Substitute Paul Lynch had Killowen’s final chance in the dying moments but
his header was straight at the ‘keeper.

Ard Na Laoi 2 Killowen 2

This top of the table clash at Leemount lived up to all expectations
as local rivals Ard Na Laoi and Killowen shared the points following an
entertaining contest. Hosts Ard Na Laoi raced into a two goal lead by the
interval but were reeled in by a spirited Killowen side who showed a marked
improvement in the second half. Hesitancy in the Killowen defence allowed
Ard Na Laoi the first opportunity after 5 minutes but their striker shot
wide from a good position. Killowen’s first attack saw Declan O’ Brien
break clear from the defence but the home ‘keeper was swiftly off his line
to avert the danger. Further chances for Killowen followed as Eoin O’
Sullivan’s shot from inside the area was blocked and his well struck free
kick after 10 minutes was slightly off target. With the action swinging
from end to end it was Ard Na Laoi who took the lead after 25 minutes as
Brian Kane was beaten from close range following some neat play in the
area. A timely block by the Ard Na Laoi ‘keeper denied Owen Braun an
equaliser 10 minutes later. However the home side were dominating the game
and extended their lead 5 minutes before the interval following some fine
interplay in midfield.
Killowen began the second half in a determined mood and pulled a goal
back in the opening minutes, a long throw caused confusion in the penalty
area and Declan O’ Donoghue was on hand to hook the ball home from close
range. However Ard Na Laoi were looking dangerous on the break and should
have extended their lead minutes later but failed to hit the target from a
favourable position. This miss proved costly as the visitors were level on
the hour, Declan O’ Brien’s pass released Eoin O’ Sullivan who outpaced the
defence to score from inside the area. The game was now there for the
taking and both sides pushed hard for the winner. Dave Lynch’s long range
shot was held by the opposing ‘keeper while Killowen’s Brian Kane watched
anxiously as a speculative effort from the halfway line cleared his
crossbar. The home side had a player dismissed after 80 minutes and Killowen
almost took advantage but O’ Sullivan shot narrowly over from inside the
box.The final minutes saw chances at both ends, Kane dived low to his left
to turn away a goalbound shot and some last ditch defending by the home
side prevented O’ Brien’s cross from reaching the unmarked Patrick
Bermingham.

Killowen 5 Keim F.C. 1

A late goalscoring spree enabled Killowen to see off visitors Keim on
Sunday last. Despite hitting the net five times, it was a far from
convincing performance by the home side. Keim dominated the opening half
and took the lead after 15 minutes as Killowen struggled to establish a
foothold on the game. Keim should have added to their lead as a close range
header in the 25th minute went wide and a long range shot grazed the
upright 5 minutes later. Despite the visitors dominance it was Killowen who
led at the break as two goals in a minute from Declan O’ Brien gave them an
unlikely advantage. His first was a strike from inside the box that took a
wicked deflection and he netted his second from close range after Dave
Lynch’s shot was parried.
Lynch had the first chance of the second half as his well struck
volley cleared the crossbar but Keim were swiftly down the other end with a
shot that flew across the face of Brian Kane’s goal. Title chasing Killowen
showed a marked improvement in performance as the half wore on and Eoin O’
Sullivan saw his long range effort go narrowly over the bar with an hour
played. It took Stephen Daly’s goal 10 minutes from time to make the game
safe and when Lynch’s pass released O’ Brien, he completed his hat-trick
with time almost up. There was still time for O’ Brien to net his fourth
goal as he raced on to Terence O’ Rourke’s through ball and calmly stroked
the ball home from inside the area.
