Killowen 1. Waterloo 0.
A.U.L. Division 2A.
Sunday April 19th 2009.
An opportunistic first half strike from Killowen striker, Brian O’ Sullivan, decided this Mid-Cork derby at Killowen on Sunday morning. The home sides line up showed two changes from last weeks victory in Millstreet, Eoin O’ Sullivan and David Mc Carthy replacing Owen Braun and Dave Lynch who were both unavailable. Killowen set the tone from the first whistle as midfielder Denis O’ Regan tested the Waterloo ‘keeper with a stinging shot in the 7th minute. Centre back Eoin O’ Sullivan ventured forward in the 14th minute but his shot found the side netting. Patrick Bermingham was next to try his luck as his dangerous free kick was blocked by the overworked Waterloo defence. Killowen ‘keeper Brian Kane was hardly troubled in the opening stages and his lone contribution was a long punt to put Brian O’ Sullivan in the clear in after 17 minutes, however, the Waterloo defence recovered to make a timely block inside the area. Waterloo did manage to create an opening in the 20th minute but unfortunately shot over from a good position. This was followed later by a well delivered free kick into the Killowen area but the resulting header drifted harmlessly wide. Killowen’s domination resumed for the remainder of the half, Declan O’ Brien volleyed over after 24 minutes and a surging run by the same player was ended by the combined efforts of the visitors defence. The O’ Sullivan brothers were again to the fore as Brian saw his effort blocked inside the area after 26 minutes and elder brother, Eoin, going close with a header minutes later. However, the pressure finally paid off in the 37th minute, Paul Lynch’s shot deflected into the path of Brian O’ Sullivan who calmly finished with a low drive past the ‘keeper. It was no more than Killowen deserved for an emphatic first half display.
Killowen were grateful for O’ Sullivan’s first half strike as it was Waterloo who asked all the questions in the second period. The home side had an early scare as Waterloo had genuine penalty claims rejected by the referee after 47 minutes. The visitors put that disappointment aside and proceeded to put Killowen under severe pressure for the remainder of the game. Killowen struggled to gain possession as it was Waterloo who created most of the opportunities but all their good work was undone by a combination of wayward finishing and the excellence of Killowen’s back four. The previously under worked Brian Kane was not found wanting either and he denied Waterloo with a pair of fine saves in the 66th and 80th minute. A rare attack by Killowen ended with Bermingham failing to get a touch to Declan O’ Donoghue’s inviting cross after 67 minutes. Waterloo continued to press for an equaliser but finally ran out of ideas as Killowen substitute Greg Creedon almost made it 2-0 in the dying minutes but his audacious lob from distance went narrowly over the crossbar.
