Saturday 23rd January.

A.U.L. 2A

Killowen 0   Coachford (B) 0.

Stalemate at Killowen on Saturday afternoon as the home side and mid-Cork rivals, Coachford, played out a scoreless draw. The Killowen line up showed a number of changes from last weeks defeat to Richmond. Kevin Collins replaced Kieran Casey at left back, Mark Cremin, Michael Moore and Brian O’ Sullivan were unavailable and were replaced by Eoin O’ Sullivan, Paul Lynch and Shane O’ Leary. O’ Sullivan was involved early on as his pass sent Patrick Bermingham clear on goal but his shot just skimmed the far post with barely a minute played. Coachford showed their attacking prowess in the 10th minute, from a Coachford corner on the right Billy Sheehan was forced in to a double save and required Owen Braun’s assistance to complete the clearance. Eoin Scannell combined well with Braun on the right wing after 20 minutes, with Braun’s cross requiring a vital interception by the visitors ‘keeper as Declan O’ Brien and Bermingham were unmarked in the six yard box. Skipper O’ Brien turned provider two minutes later as his cross found the head of Shane O’ Leary who couldn’t direct his header goalwards. Coachford should have made the most of a stray clearance by the home side after 26 minutes but failed to hit the target from a good position. Another Coachford corner led to a free header going over the bar after 28 minutes as the visitors began to establish a foothold in the game. Killowen left back, Kevin Collins, ventured forward to test the Coachford ‘keeper with a low drive after O’ Leary had set him up with a clever pass. The home side had the ball in the net six minutes before the break, but the referee correctly disallowed O’ Brien’s strike for an offside infringement.

Paul Lynch created an early second half opportunity for Bermingham whose goalbound header was tipped over. The resulting corner was cleared allowing Coachford to break at pace against a shorthanded defence, home ‘keeper Sheehan was left exposed but the Coachford striker dragged his shot wide. It was a let off for Killowen as it was the most clear cut opportunity either side had created over the 90 minutes. Bermingham and Lynch combined again after 51 minutes but the Coachford ‘keeper was equal to Lynch’s headed effort. Chances were few and far between in the closing quarter, O’ Brien nearly capitalised on a handling error from the visitors ‘keeper after 61 minutes, but he shot over from a tight angle. Both sides traded free kicks in the closing minutes, but defences held firm to ensure a scoreless encounter.

16/01/2010- County Cup 1st Rd- Killowen 0 Richmond 4

County Cup 1st round.

Saturday January 16th 2010.

Killowen 0   Richmond 4

A brace of goals in each half ensured Richmond progress to the 2nd round of the County Cup following Saturday’s tie at the Killowen venue. A.U.L. 1 side, Richmond, had the upper hand early on in this tie and were 2-0 ahead by the 35th minute and further goals in the 62nd and 86th minute sealed victory. However, the score line does not do justice to a Killowen side that played well for long periods but failed to convert numerous chances in front of goal. Richmond began brightly but poor finishing and a timely clearance by Owen Braun prevented early goals. Brian O’ Sullivan and Mark Cremin combined for Killowen’s opening attack in the 12th minute, but Cremin’s shot did not trouble the visiting ‘keeper. The Richmond custodian failed to hold Declan O’ Brien’s free kick after 14 minutes but no Killowen player was on hand to take advantage. Richmond were useful on the break and should have scored from such an attack in the 20th minute, but Eoin Scannell got back to make a timely clearance. However, Killowen were finally exposed in the 27th minute, a counterattack down the Killowen right ended with a deflected shot going in past the helpless Billy Sheehan. Richmond should have doubled their advantage two minutes later shooting over from a good position inside the area after Killowen had failed to clear a set piece. Killowen’s leading scorer, O’ Brien, showed great skill to create an opportunity for himself after 32 minutes, however, his hard work counted for nothing as his shot drifted wide at the far post. Richmond doubled their advantage in the 35th minute, a corner kick was cleared and a swift break down the Killowen left ended with a clinical finish at the near post. Killowen striker, O’ Sullivan, should have done better with chances afforded to him in the 38th and 44th minute, however, neither attempt troubled the opposing ‘keeper.

Killowen opened the second half in determined fashion and should have pulled a goal back in the 52nd minute, Dave Lynch heading narrowly wide from a Patrick Bermingham corner. Bermingham was involved again six minutes later as his flick put O’ Brien in the clear inside the penalty area but he scuffed his effort and the ball rolled harmlessly wide. Richmond survived this bout of pressure and notched their third of the afternoon after 62 minutes, a well flighted free kick unhinged the Killowen rearguard before the ball was stabbed home from close range. Despite the deficit, Killowen battled on with Owen Braun seeing his long range effort tipped over in the 82nd minute, his header from the resulting corner was also clawed to safety as Richmond’s determination to keep a clean sheet was evident. The fourth and final goal of the game arrived after 86 minutes, Killowen were shorthanded at the back and although Sheehan did well to parry the initial effort the loose ball was headed in from close range. Richmond should have made it five a minute later but were denied by Sheehan who bravely got down to foil the oncoming striker in a one on one situation. The final act in the game featured Killowen substitute, William Twomey, whose goal bound header was cleared off the line.
