Killowen 3        Coachford (B) 0.

Goals from Declan O’ Brien and John O’ Sullivan (2) propelled Killowen to a much- needed win on Saturday last. Killowen produced their best performance for weeks and this was reflected in the final scoreline. O’ Sullivan looked lively on the right wing all through the contest and his 2 goals were just reward for his endeavours. However it was not a one man show by any means as ‘keeper Alan O’ Leary and his back four can take credit for keeping a clean sheet. The margin could have been greater as Declan O’ Brien and Declan Cassidy both struck the woodwork late in the game.

Killowen 1.       Los Zarcos 2.

Killowen’s poor run of results continued following a 2-1 reverse at the hands of visitors Los Zarcos on Saturday afternoon last. On what was a bitterly cold afternoon it was the men from Millstreet who were first out of the traps, a strong surge from midfield ended with a powerful strike beyond the despairing dive of Killowen ‘keeper Alan O’ Leary. Killowen fought hard for an equalising goal, John O’ Sullivan went close to providing one but he fired over from close range. The action swung from end to end as both sides pushed forward at every opportunity. Los Zarcos almost made it 2-0 but their midfielder’s shot struck the upright and rebounded to safety. Minutes later Killowen were rewarded for their efforts as Stephen Daly’s measured pass found Dave Lynch and his accurate finish left the visitors ‘keeper helpless. But Los Zarcos struck again before the interval with another fine strike into the bottom corner leaving Killowen with plenty of work to do in the second half.

The second period began with early periods of pressure from the home side but Los Zarcos defended stoutly and looked dangerous on the break. Donal Buckley’s surging run from defence brought him into the Los Zarcos penalty area but his shot did not trouble the opposing ‘keeper. Killowen introduced Declan Cassidy into the fray and he almost snatched an equaliser in the dying minutes but his shot was wide of the target. With both defences holding firm there were no further goals and it was the visitors who held on to claim the 3 points.

Coachford (B) 1.           Killowen 2.

Killowen recorded a much needed league win following a 2-1 victory over Mid-Cork neighbours Coachford on Sunday last. Once again Dave Lynch was the hero for the visitors as he netted the winning goal late in the second half. Killowen had taken the lead after 20 minutes courtesy of a Declan O’ Brien strike and a period of dominance from the visitors saw further efforts on goal from John O’ Sullivan and Patrick Bermingham go narrowly wide. With Michael Murphy excelling in midfield Killowen finished the opening period stronger but were unable to add to their tally. Coachford , who were earlier denied an opening goal by the agility of Alan O’ Leary in the Killowen goal, equalised early in the second half to set up a tight finish. However it was Killowen who snatched the winner as Dave Lynch flicked home Greg Creedon’s corner kick at the near post to secure the 3 points.

26/02/06. County Cup.

Donoughmore 2.          Killowen 0.

Hosts Donoughmore advanced to the next round of the County Cup following a hard fought contest with neighbours Killowen. Goal’s either side of half time did the trick for Donoughmore as Killowen were left to regret numerous missed chances in front of goal. This cup-tie swung from end to end with both sides playing good constructive football despite the blustery conditions. Killowen had some early chances with Terence O’ Rourke and Greg Creedon going close to opening the scoring. However it was Donoughmore who availed of some hesitancy in the Killowen defence to make it 1-0 just before the interval.

Killowen continued to press forward in the second half and most of their attacks stemmed from the left wing where Paul Corcoran and Greg Creedon caused Donoughmore plenty problems. The home side repelled the Killowen onslaught and aided by the strong wind managed to push Killowen back in their own half. This period of dominance led to Donoughmore adding a second goal. Killowen battled hard to get back in the game but their bad luck in front of goal continued as the impressive Patrick Bermingham saw his shot hit the crossbar with time running out.

C.F.C. Banteer 4           Killowen 0.

C.F.C. Banteer inflicted a heavy defeat to visitors Killowen on Sunday last. The difficult underfoot conditions did not hinder the home side as they raced into a 2-0 lead by the interval. Killowen’s failure to defend set pieces accounted for Banteer’s lead goal, slack marking by Killowen allowed a Banteer player to sidefoot home a corner kick from close range. Declan O’ Brien tested the home ‘keeper with a couple of powerfully struck free kicks but Banteer remained solid in defence and proceeded to add a second goal soon after. Killowen were cursing their luck minutes later as Conor Mc Carthy’s shot struck the crossbar and rebounded to safety.

Banteer’s superiority continued in the second half as Killowen struggled to get back in the contest. A prolonged period of dominance from Banteer led to the inevitable third goal and thus ended this game as a contest. Killowen’s day went from bad to worse as a quickly taken free kick left the Banteer forward with all the time in the world to slot home his sides fourth goal. The visitors were awarded a penalty in the closing minutes but Stephen Daly’s effort was well saved by the Banteer custodian.

Shanavoher 2.              Killowen 0.

The scoreline does not tell the full story of this meeting between promotion chasing Shanavoher and visitors Killowen on Sunday last. It was a case of Shanavoher being economical with the chances presented to them as the visitors were left to regret a host of missed opportunities. It was honours even in the opening quarter with both sides committed to attack. Killowen’s first scoring chance arrived after 15 minutes when Conor Mc Carthy broke clear from the home defence but the advancing keeper smothered his shot. The non-stop action continued with Shanavoher hitting the side netting following a swift counter attack. However Shanavoher struck first after 20 minutes, a well - delivered corner kick was powerfully headed home at the far post to put the home side in control. But Killowen refused to lie down as Conor Mc Carthy had two fine strikes go narrowly over. Mc Carthy was denied again minutes later as he raced on to a wonderful through ball from Michael Kelleher only for the home ‘keeper to parry his shot to safety.

Killowen introduced Declan O’ Brien for the second half and he almost marked his introduction with a goal, a long ball from Donal Buckley put him in the clear but his shot went narrowly wide. Killowen were enjoying plenty possession with Michael Murphy and Dave Lynch engaged in a fierce battle with a strong Shanavoher midfield. A couple of well - struck free kicks from Declan O’ Brien gave the Shanavoher defence a few nervous moments but Killowen were still in arrears despite dominating for long periods. The old adage “Goals win Games” was never more evident in this game as Shanavoher struck again with 15 minutes left to secure the 3 points on offer and leave Killowen wondering what might have been.

Killinardrish 1.                         Killowen 2.

Killowen recorded a well-deserved victory away to Killinardrish on Sunday last. The visitors started this game brightly as some slick passing and movement had the host’s on the back foot. Michael Murphy had Killowen’s first chance of note as his well-struck free kick was just off target. With Dave Lynch controlling the midfield Killowen had the edge in the early stages of this contest. Despite Killowen’s early dominance it was Killinardrish who opened the scoring from a corner kick. Killowen worked hard for an equaliser and continued to apply pressure to the home defence. John O’ Sullivan came close to providing an equaliser but his well struck shot skimmed the crossbar. Parity was restored 10 minutes before half time as Greg Creedon’s superb cross was converted by the in-form Dave Lynch for his second goal in as many games.

Killinardrish began the second half brighter but Killowen gradually got back into the contest as Billy Reidy and Greg Creedon were a constant threat on the wings. With Michael Bevan marshalling the defence Killowen looked calm and assured entering the closing stages. Shane O’ Brien proved to be the hero for Killowen as he headed Michael Murphy’s well struck corner kick to the net with 10 minutes remaining. Killowen had the ball in the net again before the finish but Michael Kelleher’s strike was ruled offside.

22/01/06. Presidents Cup.

Ballinhassig 1.                         Killowen 1. (A.E.T.) Ballinhassig won 3-2 on penalties.

Killowen’s dreams of Presidents cup glory ended for another season following a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of Ballinhassig on Sunday last. Ballinhassig were pushed to the limit by a determined Killowen team that were highly motivated for this tie. The excellent playing surface encouraged both sides to play constructive football and this tie was not short of goalmouth incident. It was the visitors who were out of the blocks first courtesy of Dave Lynch’s well struck shot from the edge of the area after 5 minutes. Killowen did not rest on their laurels and with John O’ Sullivan leading the line superbly they pushed forward in search of a 2nd goal. However Killowen spoiled good build up play with some wayward shooting and were made to pay for this just before the interval when Ballinhassig slipped in for an equaliser.

The frantic pace of the game continued in the 2nd half with Killowen having a number of early efforts on goal courtesy of Michael Bevan and Billy Reidy. Ballinhassig had their moments too, striking the butt of the upright and forcing visiting ‘keeper Jason Reidy into making a number of smart saves. The highlight of the half came from Killowen’s Conor Mc Carthy when he cut through the opposing midfield and defence at pace but his effort on goal lacked the required accuracy.

Extra time did not provide further goals although with only minutes remaining, the hardworking John O’ Sullivan broke clear from the home defence but the advancing ‘keeper smothered his shot and thus forced the game into the lottery of a penalty shoot-out. Despite the heroics of Jason Reidy who saved 2 penalties, Killowen contrived to miss 3 of their spot kicks and so it is Ballinhassig who advance to the quarter finals.

Killowen 1.       Cork Road Celtic 4.

Killowen’s poor start to 2006 still continues, in their defence they lined up without some key players. As a result Killowen’s assistant manager Eamonn Murphy started up front with manager Declan Cassidy on the bench and making an appearance later in the game. The game started even enough with both side having equal possesion. Cork Rd made the first opening in the 10th minute with some fine play down the left resulting in a well struck shot to the corner that beat Killowen keeper Jason Reidy. Killowen upped the pace and were back on level terms by the 30th minute. Some good work by Donal Buckley and Dave Lynch set up Declan O’ Brien whose powerful shot from the edge of the box gave the opposing ‘keeper no chance. However Cork Road Celtic regained the lead just before half time as Killowen failed to deal adequately with a corner kick.

The second period saw the visitors continuing to dominate, Killowen survived a couple of close shaves as Cork Road hit the bar and Billy Reidy cleared a goalbound effort off the line. But the relentless pressure paid off as Cork Road made it 3-1 following a fine individual goal by the visitors winger. Killowen pushed extra men up front in trying to salvage something from the game but a 4th goal 5 minutes from time secured the 3 points for the visitors.

Grattan Utd (B) 3           Killowen 0.

Killowen’s visit to Grattan United on Sunday afternoon was to prove fruitless as the home side collected maximum points following a 3-0 victory. Grattan are in the frame for promotion from division 3A so this was always going to be a hard task for the visitors. Killowen had a number of chances to open the scoring as Michael Murphy and Billy Reidy went close.

However Killowen were made pay for pushing too many players forward as Grattan broke quickly from defence to open the scoring on the stroke of half time. Despite the best efforts of substitute Declan O’ Brien, Killowen failed to register a goal in the second period as a succession of chances were not converted. Hosts Grattan doubled their advantage midway through the second half and a third goal arrived soon after to condemn Killowen to a 6th league defeat of the season.

Killowen 0.       Glenthorn Celtic (B) 2.

Glenthorn Celtic made it a winning visit to Killowen on Sunday morning following a 2-0 victory over the hosts who were without a number of regulars due to illness. In truth the margin could have been higher but for the display of home ‘keeper Jason Reidy who pulled off some outstanding saves. Glenthorn were superior in all sectors as their passing and movement had Killowen on the back foot from the early stages. A brace of first half goals laid the foundation for this victory and even though Killowen rallied for the second half they were unable to penetrate the watertight Glenthorn defence. Despite the defeat Killowen can be well pleased with the displays of Greg Creedon and Conor Mc Carthy who battled right to the end.

Killowen 1.       Keim F.C. 2.

“The proverbial game of two halves” is how Killowen Assistant Manager Eamonn Murphy described Saturdays encounter with visitors Keim F.C. The weather conditions played a part in this game as the visitors had wind assistance in the first half and raced into a 2-0 lead. The home side were camped in their own half for long periods as Keim pushed forward at every opportunity. Killowen were limited to sporadic efforts on goal but a rare venture into the Keim half yielded a goal from ace marksman Conor Mc Carthy. The smart money may have been on Killowen to collect the 3 points on offer seeing as they enjoyed the advantage of the strong breeze in the second period. Despite constant pressure from the home side, Keim defended superbly and in particular their goalkeeper who pulled off some outstanding saves. It was just one of those days for Killowen as man of the match Michael Murphy hit the crossbar and Shane O’ Brien’s header was slightly off target in what was the final throw of the dice for a disappointed Killowen side.

13/11/05. AOH Cup

Killowen 1        Killeady 1 (After Extra Time) Killeady won 5-4 on penalties.

Killowen made their exit from this seasons A.O.H. cup following a hard fought encounter with visitors Killeady. It took a penalty shootout to determine a winner in this contest as both sides were evenly matched in regulation and extra time. Killowen had the better of the opening exchanges as Conor Mc Carthy and John O’ Sullivan were making an impression up front . It was O’ Sullivan who had the first chance of note but his effort just carried wide of the target. His striking partner Mc Carthy was through on goal minutes later but the Killeady goalkeeper was smartly off his line to avert the danger. However Killeady established a foothold on the game and pushed forward at every opportunity but their efforts on goal were easily dealt with by Jason Reidy in the Killowen goal. Killowen captain Stephen Daly led by example as he tried his luck from long range but his shot just carried over the crossbar.

The second period was a replication of the first as the action swung from one end to the other. Declan O’ Donoghue had a great chance to open the scoring for Killowen but his close range effort was somehow blocked by a Killeady defender. Killowen felt the game was for the taking and John O’ Sullivan saw his long range volley shave the crossbar with the visiting keeper motionless. But the visitors had other ideas and were denied once again by Jason Reidy as normal time drew to a close. Extra time was just as frantic as the preceding 90 minutes as neither side showed signs of fatigue. It took until the second period of extra time for the deadlock to be broken and it was the visitors who took the lead. A quick throw in left the home defence flatfooted, the ball was worked into the box from where the Killeady forward tucked the ball home from close range. Killeady were now in the ascendancy and hit the crossbar minutes later following good interplay in midfield. As the clock was ticking down Killowen were cursing their luck as Shane O’ Brien’s well-struck free kick was brilliantly tipped over by the Killeady custodian. However from the resulting corner Dave Lynch was on hand to hook the ball home from close range to force a penalty shootout. It was Killeady who held their nerve in the shootout and despite Jason Reidy making two fine saves it was Killeady who advance to the next round.

Ard Na Laoi 3.              Killowen 3.

Killowen and local rivals Ard Na Laoi shared the points in Sunday mornings 3-3 stalemate. The visitors lead 2-0 and 3-1 during this contest but were pinned back in the second half courtesy of some fine play by the hosts and by slackness in the Killowen rearguard. Killowen started well and scorched into a 2-0 lead early in the 1st half with Conor Mc Carthy and John O’ Sullivan on target. Ard Na Laoi pulled a goal back before half time but Killowen were full value for their slender lead. Early in the 2nd half Conor Mc Carthy made it 3-1 and Killowen seemed to be coasting to maximum points but injuries to defenders Terence O’ Rourke and Brian Kane meant a reshuffle in the Killowen ranks which Ard Na Laoi capitalised on with 2 late goals to earn a share of the spoils. Top performers for a disappointed Killowen were Dave Lynch and Michael Murphy.

Los Zarcos 1.               Killowen 1.

John O’ Sullivan scored 5 minutes from time to give Killowen a share of the points away to Los Zarcos. In truth Killowen should have secured all 3 points as they dominated the game for long periods. Killowen passed the ball well and created many scoring opportunities. Conor Mc Carthy went close on a number of occasions as Killowen held the upper hand in midfield where Declan O’ Donoghue was prominent. Los Zarcos took the lead but that spurred the visitors on and a deserved equaliser arrived from O’ Sullivan with 5 minutes to go. Killowen had good performances from Eoin Scannell and Paul Corcoran over the 90 minutes.

Killowen 0.                   Shanavoher 1.

Killowen were seeking a third league win in a row as they entertained visitors Shanavoher on Saturday last. Following on from a fine performance in their previous outing the home side entered this game with high expectations. However it was Shanavoher who posed all the questions in a hard fought opening half as their passing and movement caused some anxious moments for the hosts. With Eoin Scannell prominent in defence, Killowen weathered the storm and produced a number of scoring opportunities but Conor Mc Carthy and Declan O’ Brien’s efforts were off target. As half time approached Killowen goalkeeper Jason Reidy showed his class with a stunning save to deny the visitors.

The second period began with some early pressure from Killowen as both Conor Mc Carthy and the impressive Dave Lynch tested the visiting keeper. A defensive lapse left Mc Carthy with only the keeper to beat but he shot narrowly wide. Killowen’s failure to convert these chances was to prove costly as Shanavoher took the lead in the 75th minute following a sustained period of pressure. It could have been 2-0 minutes later but Mark Bickerdike was on hand to clear off the line. Killowen pushed forward in search of an equaliser but Shanavoher held firm in defence and collected the 3 points on offer.

Killowen 3.       Killinardrish 1.

Killowen recorded their 2nd league win of the season following Thursday night’s 3-1 victory over visitors Killinardrish. On a perfect evening for football both sides contributed to an entertaining game. It was honours even during the early stages of this contest with very little goalmouth action. However Killowen held all the aces in midfield where Dave Lynch and the outstanding Michael Murphy dominated proceedings. Killowen’s first scoring opportunity arrived in the 20th minute when Conor Mc Carthy dispossessed the Killinardrish custodian at the edge of the box but his effort on goal was blocked by the retreating defence. His striking partner Declan O’ Brien was also in the action as he raced on to Mark Bickerdike’s measured pass only to see his shot drift wide of the post. The deadlock was finally broken on the half-hour when Shane O’ Brien’s run was halted illegally at the edge of the area, the resulting free kick was powerfully struck home by Declan O’ Brien to give Killowen a deserved lead. However this stirred the away side into action as they pressed hard for an equaliser before the interval.

Killowen doubled their advantage early in the 2nd half when Declan O’ Brien’s shot was parried by the visiting keeper into the path of Conor Mc Carthy who made no mistake from close range. Killinardrish now faced a difficult task but to their credit battled hard to get back in the contest and took advantage of a defensive lapse by the home side to make it 2-1 with 25 minutes left. But an equalising goal was not forthcoming, as it was Killowen who struck again through Mc Carthy as he collected a Jason Twohig pass and calmly chipped the keeper for his 2nd goal of the night. Substitute Paul Corcoran almost made it number 4 but his sweetly struck volley flashed wide of the target.
