Killowen 1 Macroom (B) 0
It took a stunning free kick in added time from Killowen’s Declan O’
Brien to settle this top of the table clash between Killowen and visitors
Macroom on Sunday last. In what was a lively contest both sides had chances
early on, Macroom forced a number of corners and almost took the lead after
5 minutes but Eoin Scannell saved the home side with a timely goal line
clearance. The impressive Patrick Doyle headed over from six yards out in
what was Killowen’s first attack of note after 10 minutes.Another header
from Doyle had the Macroom ‘keeper at full stretch with 25 minutes played.
But, Macroom, fresh from their President’s Cup victory, were enjoying
plenty success on the wings but their fine build up play was spoiled by
some wayward finishing. However, Killowen finally got to the pace of the
game as Doyle and Eoin O’ Sullivan were now prominent in midfield and Paul
Lynch was now making an impression upfront. Macroom’s poor finishing in
front of goal was evident again in the 40th minute, a well delivered cross
from the left was met with a tame header into the arms home ‘keeper Brian
Kane. Killowen almost made the breakthrough before half time, the lively
Darren Mc Sweeney saw his goalbound shot blocked and he then shot into the
side netting from a good position.
Macroom had the first effort of the second half but were foiled by
Kane’s point blank save in the 60th minute as the visitors struggled to
make inroads against a solid Killowen defence for whom Terence O’ Rourke
and Dave Lynch excelled throughout. Indeed Lynch found time to venture
forward but his shot from distance drifted wide of the post. With defences
now on top, both sides were reduced to long range shooting but neither
‘keeper was seriously tested. As the game drifted towards its conclusion
and the inevitable stalemate, Declan O’ Brien broke clear from the Macroom
defence and his progress towards goal was ended when he was fouled at the
edge of the area. The referee dismissed the offending player and awarded
Killowen a free kick in a very favourable position. Up stepped O’ Brien and
his powerful strike found the bottom corner of the net to send the Killowen
management and supporters wild with joy.
A minutes silence was observed prior to kick off in memory of the late Mrs.
Mary Dilworth (R.I.P.) who was a life long supporter of the Killowen club.

Kanturk (B) 1 Killowen 1.
Kanturk and visitors Killowen shared the points following a
hard fought encounter at the Kanturk venue on Sunday last. With both
defences in top form, goalscoring chances were few and far between. Kanturk
started brightly and should have taken the lead mid way through the half
but were denied by a timely goal line clearance from Owen Braun. Patrick
Bermingham had Killowen’s only efforts on goal during the opening period,
his close range shot was blocked by the home keeper and a powerful shot
from distance was comfortably dealt with. The deadlock was finally broken
after 60 minutes, Greg Creedon’s pass released Dave Lynch whose forceful
run was abruptly ended in the penalty area. Up stepped Eoin O’ Sullivan and
he made no mistake from the spot to give Killowen the advantage. However,
Kanturk, who had genuine claims for a penalty rejected, grabbed an
equaliser after 65 minutes following a mix up in the Killowen defence.
Killowen pushed forward in search of a winner and Lynch saw his long range
effort brilliantly tipped over by the Kanturk custodian after 80 minutes.
Substitute Paul Lynch had Killowen’s final chance in the dying moments but
his header was straight at the ‘keeper.

Ard Na Laoi 2 Killowen 2
This top of the table clash at Leemount lived up to all expectations
as local rivals Ard Na Laoi and Killowen shared the points following an
entertaining contest. Hosts Ard Na Laoi raced into a two goal lead by the
interval but were reeled in by a spirited Killowen side who showed a marked
improvement in the second half. Hesitancy in the Killowen defence allowed
Ard Na Laoi the first opportunity after 5 minutes but their striker shot
wide from a good position. Killowen’s first attack saw Declan O’ Brien
break clear from the defence but the home ‘keeper was swiftly off his line
to avert the danger. Further chances for Killowen followed as Eoin O’
Sullivan’s shot from inside the area was blocked and his well struck free
kick after 10 minutes was slightly off target. With the action swinging
from end to end it was Ard Na Laoi who took the lead after 25 minutes as
Brian Kane was beaten from close range following some neat play in the
area. A timely block by the Ard Na Laoi ‘keeper denied Owen Braun an
equaliser 10 minutes later. However the home side were dominating the game
and extended their lead 5 minutes before the interval following some fine
interplay in midfield.
Killowen began the second half in a determined mood and pulled a goal
back in the opening minutes, a long throw caused confusion in the penalty
area and Declan O’ Donoghue was on hand to hook the ball home from close
range. However Ard Na Laoi were looking dangerous on the break and should
have extended their lead minutes later but failed to hit the target from a
favourable position. This miss proved costly as the visitors were level on
the hour, Declan O’ Brien’s pass released Eoin O’ Sullivan who outpaced the
defence to score from inside the area. The game was now there for the
taking and both sides pushed hard for the winner. Dave Lynch’s long range
shot was held by the opposing ‘keeper while Killowen’s Brian Kane watched
anxiously as a speculative effort from the halfway line cleared his
crossbar. The home side had a player dismissed after 80 minutes and Killowen
almost took advantage but O’ Sullivan shot narrowly over from inside the
box.The final minutes saw chances at both ends, Kane dived low to his left
to turn away a goalbound shot and some last ditch defending by the home
side prevented O’ Brien’s cross from reaching the unmarked Patrick
Bermingham.

Killowen 5 Keim F.C. 1
A late goalscoring spree enabled Killowen to see off visitors Keim on
Sunday last. Despite hitting the net five times, it was a far from
convincing performance by the home side. Keim dominated the opening half
and took the lead after 15 minutes as Killowen struggled to establish a
foothold on the game. Keim should have added to their lead as a close range
header in the 25th minute went wide and a long range shot grazed the
upright 5 minutes later. Despite the visitors dominance it was Killowen who
led at the break as two goals in a minute from Declan O’ Brien gave them an
unlikely advantage. His first was a strike from inside the box that took a
wicked deflection and he netted his second from close range after Dave
Lynch’s shot was parried.
Lynch had the first chance of the second half as his well struck
volley cleared the crossbar but Keim were swiftly down the other end with a
shot that flew across the face of Brian Kane’s goal. Title chasing Killowen
showed a marked improvement in performance as the half wore on and Eoin O’
Sullivan saw his long range effort go narrowly over the bar with an hour
played. It took Stephen Daly’s goal 10 minutes from time to make the game
safe and when Lynch’s pass released O’ Brien, he completed his hat-trick
with time almost up. There was still time for O’ Brien to net his fourth
goal as he raced on to Terence O’ Rourke’s through ball and calmly stroked
the ball home from inside the area.

Coachford (B) 0 Killowen 1.
Killowen snatched a dramatic victory over mid Cork rivals Coachford
as Owen Braun’s 85th minute goal proved to be the difference between the
sides. With both teams having title aspirations it was Coachford who were
in control early on as Killowen ‘keeper Brian Kane was called into action
with a smart save in the first minute. The resulting corner was headed
against the upright as the Killowen defence lived dangerously. Kane again
thwarted the home side in the 3rd minute, turning away a powerfully struck
free kick at the expense of a corner. However Killowen settled and did have
chances when firstly Declan O’ Brien and then Owen Braun were wide with
close range efforts. Coachford were dangerous on the break and the
impressive Kane was smartly off his line to foil Coachford again in the
40th minute. The final moments of the half saw Declan O’ Brien’s well
struck free kick touched around the post, the outstanding Dave Lynch
heading narrowly over from the resulting corner.
Declan Cassidy’s side were growing in confidence by the minute and
went close to breaking the deadlock on the hour, Owen Braun saw his
glancing header cleared off the line. His strike partner O’ Brien then
tried his luck from long range as both sides sensed victory.Only a timely
interception in the penalty area by the excellent Terence O’ Rourke
prevented Coachford from taking the lead with 15 minutes remaining. With
the full time whistle looming there was still time for more drama as
Killowen were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Coachford area. The
home sides ‘keeper could only parry Declan O’ Brien’s kick and the ever
alert Braun netted the rebound to keep Killowen’s title hopes on track.

22/04/07. Corinthians Cup 3rd Round.
City Wanderers 2. Killowen 0.
City Wanderers advanced to the next round of the Corinthians Cup
following a 2-0 victory over visitors Killowen. Goal’s in either half did
the trick for the hosts as Killowen failed to find the target despite
creating plenty opportunities. Wanderers took the lead after 30 minutes
from a corner kick that was touched home from close range. However
Killowen did create chances of their own during the half and the best fell to
John O’ Sullivan but his effort was off target. With Declan O’ Donoghue and
Patrick Doyle impressing in midfield Killowen started the second period
strongly, the hard working Patrick Bermingham and Donal Buckley both
having near misses early on. But try as they might, Killowen could not break
down the Wanderers defence and a well taken goal 5 minutes from time sealed
victory for the hosts.

Cork Road Celtic 2. Killowen 0.
Killowen’s quest for a seventh league victory in a row was ended
abruptly following a 2-0 reverse at the hands of Cork Road Celtic on
Tuesday evening last. The perfect playing conditions at the Fermoy venue
allowed both sides to contribute to a fine contest. It was honours even
for the opening stages of the game as both sides were guilty of squandering
genuine goalscoring opportunities. The most glaring miss occurred after
twenty minutes, the north Cork side were awarded a penalty following a
late tackle in the box, but the resulting kick was off target and both teams
remained deadlocked for the remainder of the half. The second half saw
Cork Road dominate proceedings and were ahead within ten minutes of the
restart courtesy of a powerful header from inside the area. Despite the best
efforts of Terence O’ Rourke and Patrick Doyle , Killowen were struggling
to make headway and found themselves two goals in arrears minutes later.
A corner kick was not cleared properly and in the confusion that followed
the ball was scrambled home from close range to leave the mid Cork men with a
mountain to climb. Killowen did have chances late in the game but Owen
Braun’s and Declan O’ Donoghue’s goalbound efforts were comfortably dealt
with by the home ‘keeper. Despite this setback Killowen are still in
contention for honours with six games left to play in what is a very
competitive division.

Killowen 2 Rathcoole Rovers (B) 1.
Goals from Eoin O’ Sullivan and Owen Braun made it six league wins in
a row for Killowen following Sundays clash with Rathcoole Rovers. It was a
hard fought victory for the hosts as Rathcoole put up a brave fight over
the ninety minutes. Following a tedious opening period the home side
managed to open the scoring midway through the half, Declan O’ Donoghue was
tripped in the box and Eoin O’ Sullivan despatched the resultant penalty
with ease. This goal settled Killowen and Patrick Bermingham almost added a
second goal before the interval but his shot just shaved the post. Despite
their lowly league position, Rathcoole were proving more than a match for
Killowen and having hit the woodwork in the first half they proceeded to
dominate the early stages of the second period. This resulted in an
equalising goal after twenty minutes, a free kick from the edge of the box
was drilled into the bottom corner of the net. However Killowen refused to
panic and Declan O’ Brien went close minutes later with a close range shot
that was blocked by the visitors ‘keeper. Killowen pushed forward in search
of a winner and the all important goal arrived with fifteen minutes left to
play. Declan O’ Brien’s well struck free from the left wing was touched
home at the far post by the lurking Owen Braun to put the home side in the
ascendancy again. Indeed Braun almost made it 3-1 in the dying minutes but
his shot struck the crossbar and rebounded to safety. With the title race
hotting up in this division there are vital games ahead for Killowen who
must face fellow contenders Coachford and Macroom in the coming weeks.

08/04/07. Corinthians Cup.
Killowen 2. Afton Villa 2. (A.E.T.) Killowen won 3-2 on penalties.
Killowen made further progress in the Corinthians cup on Sunday last following a hard fought victory against higher ranked Afton Villa. The home side had to come from behind twice during normal time and had to rely on goalkeeper Brian Kane’s heroics in the resulting penalty shootout before finally advancing to the next round. Indeed the hosts could have avoided such a finale if they had converted the numerous chances during the opening half of the contest.Despite enjoying long periods of dominance, Killowen somehow found themselves in arrears as Villa availed of slackness in the home defence to take the lead. However parity was restored just before half time as Shane O’ Brien was fouled in the box and the resulting penalty was converted by Eoin O’ Sullivan.
The second half saw Killowen continuing to dominate but again it was Afton Villa who grabbed the lead as Killowen struggled to clear form a set piece. Killowen refused to throw in the towel and Eoin O’ Sullivan went close to an equaliser but his long range free kick shaved the post. With 20 minutes to go the sides were level again as Greg Creedon’s corner kick was met by Shane O’ Brien and his well placed header gave the ‘keeper no chance. Both sides battled for a winner in the closing stages of normal time but with the deadlock still not broken extra time was required. Extra time saw only one incident of note as Owen Braun’s close range effort beat the ‘keeper but rolled outside the post. It was on to the dreaded shootout and Killowen looked dead and buried as they found themselves 2-0 in arrears. However Brian Kane proved to be the hero for Killowen as he saved 3 penalties in a row and it was Dave Lynch who converted the decisive kick to send Killowen into the next round.

01/04/07. A.U.L. 3A.
Killford 0. Killowen 10.
Killowen had a memorable trip to Carrigadrohid on Sunday last as they
reached double figures against local side Killford and subsequently moved
to pole position in A.U.L. 3A. Killford were shorthanded for this fixture
but managed to frustrate Killowen in the opening stages mainly due to the
heroics of the home ‘keeper who pulled off some fine saves. It took
Killowen time to adjust to the bumpy playing surface and despite enjoying
plenty possession it took almost twenty minutes for the first goal to
arrive, Darren Mc Sweeney’s excellent delivery from the right wing was
headed in by Owen Braun. Killowen were now in top gear and tacked on three
more goals before the interval courtesy of Declan O’ Brien (2) and Patrick
Bermingham.
Despite the game being over as a contest Killowen did not relent and
added further goals from Braun again and centre half Dave Lynch who hit the
target with a superb overhead kick.To their credit Killford battled gamely
but could not find a way past a Killowen defence for whom Terence O’ Rourke
excelled. The goals continued to flow as Declan O’ Brien completed his
hat-trick followed by further goals form Patrick Bermingham and a superb
individual effort from Declan O’ Donoghue. The rout was completed as Dave
Lynch netted his second and Killowen’s tenth of the game just before full
time.

Killowen 3 Los Zarcos 2.
Killowen staged their own “Late Late Show” on Sunday last as two
goals in the final 5 minutes were required to overcome visitors Los Zarcos.
Conditions were far from perfect as the heavy underfoot conditions hindered
both sides. Killowen started brightly with Eoin O’ Sullivan having his
shot from distance turned away by the Los Zarcos custodian. Strikers Owen
Braun and Paul Lynch were keeping the visitors defence on their toes, it
was the latter who went close to opening the scoring midway through the
half but his snapshot was turned away for a corner. However after 30
minutes of the half Killowen were stunned as it was the north Cork side
who took the lead courtesy of a powerful shot from inside the box.
The hosts resumed for the second half in a determined mood and were
level within 10 minutes. Owen Braun chased what seemed a lost cause and as
a result of his endeavours, the ball broke to Patrick Bermingham who tapped
in from close range. The second half was more frantic and the action swung
from end to end as Los Zarcos were seeking revenge for an early season
defeat in Millstreet. They managed to edge ahead again after 20 minutes of
the half as Killowen failed to clear their lines resulting in the visiting
centre forward netting from close range. To make matters worse Killowen
were denied a blatant penalty when Owen Braun was felled in the box but the
referee ignored the home sides claims. However the introduction of
substitutes Stephen Daly and Patrick Doyle was to have the desired effect
as Daly grabbed an equaliser in the dying minutes following good work by
Doyle. Killowen clinched all 3 points in added time as Doyle’s cross from
the right was turned into his own net by the visitors centre half to leave
Killowen’s title ambitions back on track.

24/02/07. County Cup.
Lakewood Athletic 1 Killowen 0.
Lakewood Athletic advanced to the next round of the County Cup
following a hard earned victory against Killowen on Sunday last. It took a
goal midway through the second half to decide this cup tie but it could
have been so different for a Killowen side who were without four regulars.
It was the visitors who dominated the opening half but had the misfortune
of twice hitting the woodwork as well as failing to convert numerous goal
scoring chances. Despite the best efforts of midfielders Eoin O’ Sullivan
and Declan O’ Donoghue, Killowen failed to hit the target against a
Lakewood side that showed a marked improvement in the second period.
Killowen were made to regret their missed opportunities as Lakewood struck
for what was the winning goal midway through the second half but they
failed to add to their tally as the visitors ‘keeper Brian Kane turned in
another good performance between the sticks.

Killowen 1. C.F.C. Banteer 0.
A first half strike from Darren Mc Sweeney gave Killowen their third league
win in a row following Sunday’s clash with visitors Banteer. With both
sides in contention for league honours, it was little surprise that it took
a single goal to decide the outcome. Indeed Banteer made the hosts work
hard for the win and Killowen can thank ‘keeper Brian Kane whose agility
denied the visitors an equaliser late in the game. The home side did have
chances to extend their lead but Eoin O’ Sullivan’s free kick struck the
upright and regular marksman Owen Braun fired narrowly wide from close
range. Killowen held on to their slim advantage during the second period
and despite periods of dominance from Banteer it was the mid-Cork men who
availed of the 3 points on offer.

Macroom (B) 0. Killowen 3.
Killowen’s trip to Macroom proved to be a winning one as a brace from
Owen Braun and a stunning free kick from Michael Murphy condemned Macroom
to their first league defeat of the season. However this was a hard earned
win for the visitors as Macroom dominated for long periods during the
opening half but a combination of poor finishing and excellent goalkeeping
by Brian Kane kept Killowen in contention. Terence O’ Rourke and Dave Lynch
proved to be unbeatable at heart of the visitors defence and broke Macroom
hearts on more than one occasion over the ninety minutes. Killowen showed
signs of improvement as the half progressed thanks to the efforts of Declan
O’ Donoghue and Eoin O’ Sullivan who dominated the midfield sector for the
remainder of the contest. The visitors resolute defending and hard work
paid off just before the interval as Paul Lynch’s flick on allowed Owen
Braun to score from inside the box. The goal gave the visitors renewed
confidence and the margin was doubled in the opening minutes of the second
half as Lynch again set up his strike partner to score from close range.
Macroom refused to throw in the towel and were posing a threat from set
pieces but Brian Kane and his defence were determined to keep a clean sheet
and the game was ended as a contest when Michael Murphy’s superbly struck
free kick made it 3-0 with 15 minutes left to play.

Killowen 1. Cork Road Celtic 0.
An Owen Braun goal midway through the second half ensured maximum
points for Killowen following a hard fought encounter with visitors Cork
Road Celtic. Both sides contributed to a fine game with plenty goalmouth
action and it was surprising that it took a single goal to decide the
outcome. Killowen had the better of the opening exchanges and almost took
the lead early on courtesy of Michael Murphy’s long range effort which was
brilliantly tipped over by the visiting ‘keeper. The home side were
enjoying plenty success on the wings as Darren Mc Sweeney and Eoin O’
Sullivan were prominent throughout the ninety minutes. Indeed O’ Sullivan
went close to opening the scoring late in the half but his well struck shot
just shaved the crossbar.
However it was a different story in the second half as the North Cork
side began to dominate proceedings. Home ‘keeper Brian Kane was called into
action early on as he was smartly off his line to deny Celtic a certain
goal and he followed that up with a brilliant double save minutes later.
This proved to be the turning point in this contest as Killowen’s next
attack provided the deciding goal. A Terence O’ Rourke free was flicked on
by Paul Lynch and the ever alert Owen Braun made no mistake from close
range. Killowen closed ranks at the back where Greg Creedon and Dave Lynch
were dominant throughout and they survived a late scare when Eoin
Scannell’s timely block denied the visitors an equalising goal.

Doneraile (B) 4 Killowen 2.
Killowen slipped to another defeat in AUL 3A following Sundays 4-2
defeat at the hands of Doneraile. An early injury to keeper Brian Kane did
not help matters for the visitors who found themselves 1-0 down midway
through the first half. Killowen went close to an equaliser but the
Doneraile custodian made a superb from Owen Braun. Doneraile added a second
goal within minutes of the second half leaving Killowen with a mountain to
climb. However Killowen began to dominate and created plenty chances but
were again denied by the home ‘keeper. But a goal from Terence O’ Rourke
gave the visitors hope with 15 minutes left to play. The game was ended as
a contest as Doneraile punished some sloppy defending for their 3rd and 4th
goals. With time almost up Micheal Murphy pulled a goal back to make it
4-2.

Killowen 3 Doneraile (B) 2.
Eoin O’ Sullivan was the hero for Killowen as his goal 10 minutes
from time gave the home side a vital win over Doneraile. Indeed the home
side had to come from behind twice during the contest before finally
getting the better of a determined Doneraile side. The strong wind made
life difficult for both teams as did the sticky underfoot conditions.
Doneraile took advantage of the conditions and were in the lead after 20
mins courtesy of a wind assisted free kick from the half way line. Owen
Braun went close for Killowen minutes later and the same player was
instrumental in Killowen’s equaliser as his cross was touched home by
Darren Mc Sweeney to leave the sides level at the interval. Despite the
home side having wind advantage it was Doneraile who went back in front as
home ‘keeper Brian Kane did well to block a powerfully struck free kick but
the opposing forward was on hand to knock the rebound in from close range.
Killowen continued to apply pressure and Paul Lynch and Patrick Bermingham
both spurned good opportunities. However following a well delivered free
kick into the box , Dave Lynch glanced a header past the ‘keeper to restore
parity once again. Killowen introduced Eoin O’ Sullivan for his debut and
he was to have an immediate impact, with 10 minutes left on the clock he
collected the ball inside the box and his finish to the bottom corner of
the net proved to be the winning goal.

Killowen 0 Coachford (B) 1
Killowen’s title hopes in AUL 3A were dented as visitors Coachford secured maximum points courtesy of a penalty five minutes from time. In truth Coachford were full value for their victory as Killowen turned in their poorest performance of the season so far. Home ‘keeper Brian Kane kept the visitors at bay with a string of fine saves as Coachford looked lively from the first whistle. Despite the best efforts of Michael Murphy and Declan O’ Donoghue in midfield, Killowen struggled to break down a watertight Coachford defence. Strikers Patrick Bermingham and Paul Lynch tested the visiting ‘keeper with a couple of long range efforts as Killowen pressed for an opening goal before the interval. However Coachford began to dominate proceedings in the second half but were unable to find a way past the Killowen defence for whom Terence O’ Rourke and Dave Lynch excelled. But Killowen’s luck ran out in the closing minutes as a mistimed tackle in the area resulted in a penalty for the visitors. Coachford made no mistake from 12 yards and Killowen’s heroic defending counted for nothing as the visitors left with maximum points. Killowen.

05/11/06. A.O.H. Cup.
Killowen 2. Everton 3.
Despite a battling display , Killowen made their exit from this seasons A.O.H. cup following Sundays encounter with visitors Everton. Killowen were without five regulars but still made life difficult for their higher ranked opponents and had the benefit of an early goal courtesy of Owen Braun. But this advantage was short lived as Everton equalised almost immediately. Home ‘keeper Eamonn Murphy kept Everton at bay with a couple of smart saves as the game swung from end to end with chances for both sides, Michael Bevan saw his long range shot graze the upright as Killowen pressed hard for a lead goal but were dealt a blow just before half time as Everton swooped for a second goal.
However Killowen did not throw in the towel and began the second half in determined fashion. Despite the home sides dominance it took almost twenty minutes of the half for the equalising goal to arrive. Declan O’ Brien’s low delivery was met at the far post by the hardworking Paul Lynch for a deserved equaliser. However disaster struck for Killowen soon after when they were reduced to 10 men and then found themselves 3-2 down as Everton availed of hesitancy in the Killowen backline. Killowen had a couple of opportunities to equalise late in the game as firstly Declan O’ Brien shot narrowly over and a well struck free kick from Declan O’ Donoghue was slightly off target.

C.F.C Banteer 1 Killowen 1.
C.F.C. Banteer and visitors Killowen shared the points following an entertaining and hard fought encounter at the Banteer venue on Saturday last. The home side were looking for their fifth win in succession and faced a Killowen side who were intent on retaining top spot in this division. Dave Lynch made a welcome return to the Killowen ranks and he lined out alongside Terence O’ Rourke at the heart of the Killowen defence. Killowen also included recent signing Darren Mc Sweeney in the starting line up and he turned in an impressive performance over the ninety minutes.
The home side began brightly and were soon in front following an early goal but were unable to add to their tally as Killowen began to establish a foothold in midfield courtesy of Michael Murphy and Owen Braun. The hard work was rewarded just before the interval when Braun glanced home a header from inside the box following a long throw by Terence O’ Rourke. The second half replicated the first with defences well on top but both sides failed to hit the target and the game drifted towards the inevitable stalemate. The home side did have one final chance from a disputed free kick but Killowen stood firm and cleared the danger.

14/10/06. Presidents Cup.
Killowen 0 Ardmanning Celtic 2 (After Extra Time)
Killowen bowed out of this seasons Presidents Cup following a 2-0 reverse at the hands of visitors Ardmanning Celtic on Saturday last. This was a typical cup tie with plenty of endeavour and passion shown by both sides. Killowen had the better of the opening exchanges as Alan O’ Connor and Greg Creedon were dominating on the left flank. Killowen’s best chance of the half fell to Declan O’ Brien as he rounded the visiting keeper but his shot from a tight angle was cleared by the retreating defenders. However Killowen did not have it all their own way, Ardmanning had their moments but were denied by home ‘keeper Brian Kane who had a steady game throughout.
Killowen began the second half brightly and nearly opened the scoring through Paul Lynch but his well struck shot was slightly off target. Ardmanning were then denied a lead goal by Brian Kane as he saved superbly from a well struck free kick.. With both teams defending well goalscoring chances were at a premium during this period. As the sides were deadlocked after 90 minutes this meant extra time and possibly the dreaded penalty shoot out to determine a winner. With substitute Darren Mc Sweeney making an immediate impact on the left wing, Killowen went all out for a winner in extra time, but their hard work was not rewarded with a goal. It was the visitors who got the decisive lead goal midway through the 1st period of extra time as the tired legs on both sides began to show. Despite Killowen pushing extra men up front, an equaliser was not forthcoming and Ardmanning made sure of victory courtesy of a powerfully struck free kick in the dying minutes of extra time.

Killowen 0. Ard Na Laoi 1.
Killowen’s unbeaten start to the season was ended by local rivals Ard Na Laoi on Saturday last. This was a close encounter between two evenly matched sides and it was hardly surprising that a single goal decided the outcome. The all important goal arrived within the opening 10 minutes as the visitors availed of hesitancy in the Killowen ranks to open the scoring. Patrick Bermingham came close to an equaliser minutes later but Killowen were struggling to make inroads against a well organised Ard Na Laoi defence. The second half replicated the first as both defences were watertight and it was going to take something special to add to the scoring. However Killowen were unable to find an equaliser and despite the best efforts of Eoin Scannell and Greg Creedon it was the visitors who availed of the three points on offer.

Los Zarcos 1, Killowen 6.
Killowen’s unbeaten start to the season continues following a resounding victory away to Los Zarcos on Sunday last. The foundations for this victory were laid in the first half as Killowen’s superior passing and movement had the home side on the backfoot. Michael Murphy opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the eight minute and Killowen’s lead was doubled minutes later by Declan O’ Brien as he availed of Declan O’ Donoghue’s excellent pass to put the visitors 2-0 ahead. O’ Donoghue then made it 3 -0 with a fine individual effort to leave the visitors with a comfortable half time lead.
Los Zarcos began the second half brightly and some early pressure was rewarded with a goal. But any hopes of a Los Zarcos comeback were quickly ended by Patrick Bermingham as he struck twice in a matter of minutes to extend Killowen’s lead. Bermingham completed his hat-trick near the end with the goal of the game as his 25 yard lob left the home keeper stranded. Best for Killowen were Terence O’ Rourke in defence and goalkeeper Brian Kane.
